Footscray sate Labor MP Katie Hall needed urgent surgery after she was allegedly assaulted while trying to stop a woman being attacked outside her electorate office.
Ms Hall said she witnessed the attack in Nicholson Street, Footscray, on June 25, when a man collided with two women walking in the opposite direction, causing one of them to fall to the ground.
According to Ms Hall, the man then kicked the woman in the head until the MP intervened.
“My only thought was to stop an act of violence and protect a woman being senselessly attacked,” Ms Hall told The Age.
“I have zero tolerance for this happening to anyone in my community.
“I believe that the thug is now exactly where he should be – in custody.”
Ms Hall said the attack happened around lunchtime near her electorate office in Footscray’s busy Nicholson Street precinct.
As she called for help, the man allegedly headbutted her, knocking her to the ground and injuring her hand so badly that she later required emergency surgery for damaged tendons.
The Footscray MP said she called Triple Zero and followed the alleged offender around the corner towards Footscray station, where he was arrested by police.
Ms Hall alleged she was headbutted and knocked to the ground near her Nicholson Street electorate office about 12.45 pm on June 25.
The alleged offender is understood to have been remanded in custody ahead of a court appearance this month.
Victoria Police has been contacted for further details about the incident, including the charges laid and the man’s next court date.
Ms Hall said she was grateful to emergency services and members of the public who stepped in to help after the attack.
“There were many kind people who stopped to help, including a gentleman who assisted me in ensuring the offender was located and arrested,” she said.
“I’m grateful to Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria for their swift action and care.”
Ms Hall has represented Footscray in the Victorian Parliament since 2018. Her official parliamentary profile describes her as the Labor member for Footscray and says her political work is driven by a commitment to social justice, fairness and the inner west.
The attack has again raised concerns about public safety in Footscray’s central business area, where residents and traders have repeatedly raised concerns about violence, antisocial behaviour and crime.
Crime Statistics Agency Victoria data shows Victoria Police recorded 468,711 criminal incidents in the year to March 2026, down 1 per cent from 473,518 incidents in the previous 12-month period. Recorded offences were also down slightly, from 626,950 to 625,426, in the year to March 2026.
However, community concern in Footscray remains high, with the Nicholson Street area repeatedly identified by traders and residents as a trouble spot. A 2025 report on Footscray traders described growing concerns about violence, drug use and antisocial behaviour around Nicholson Street Mall, with businesses calling for stronger action.
Ms Hall’s electorate office is listed at 204 Nicholson Street, Footscray, placing the incident in the heart of the suburb’s civic and commercial precinct.
The alleged assault on the MP also comes amid wider debate over public safety in Victoria, bail laws, police resources and repeat offending.
For Ms Hall, the incident was personal and immediate: a woman was allegedly being kicked in the head, and she stepped in.
Her intervention left her needing surgery, but she said the priority was protecting a member of her community from violence.
The case is now before the courts.
