UNSW has received approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India to establish and operate its first international campus in Bengaluru, marking a major milestone in the expanding education partnership between Australia and India.
The approval confirms that UNSW Bengaluru meets India’s regulatory and quality standards for foreign higher education institutions, providing assurance to prospective students and families around academic quality, governance and student experience.
UNSW Vice-Chancellor and President Prof. Attila Brungs said Bengaluru’s status as a global technology and innovation hub made it an ideal location for the university’s first campus in India.
“Bengaluru’s position as a global technology and innovation hub makes it an ideal location for our first campus in India. Through strong industry integration, future-focused programs and global academic standards, we aim to prepare students for the rapidly evolving workforce and careers of the future,” Prof. Brungs said.
The new campus, expected to commence classes in August 2026 at Embassy Manyata Business Park in North Bengaluru, will initially offer undergraduate degrees in Business, Computer Science and Data Science, along with a postgraduate program in Cyber Security. Further programs are expected to be introduced in subsequent academic years.
Professor Sarah Maddison, UNSW Deputy Vice-Chancellor Education and Student Experience, said the Bengaluru campus would provide students with a globally connected learning experience combining academic rigour with practical learning and industry engagement.
“In addition to academic excellence, UNSW Bengaluru will offer a supportive and inclusive campus environment, centred on student empowerment, wellbeing and engagement and career readiness,” she said.
The Australian High Commissioner to India, Philip Green, said the approval reflected the strength of Australia–India education ties and confidence in Australian higher education.
“The approval of UNSW Bengaluru by the Indian government is further endorsement of the quality of Australian education. It reflects the growing strength of the Australia-India education relationship and the shared commitment of both countries towards advancing research, innovation and talent development,” he said.
Located within Embassy Manyata Business Park, the campus sits in one of Bengaluru’s major technology and business corridors, home to more than 60 multinational and Fortune 500 companies including IBM, Nokia, ANZ, Cognizant and Rolls-Royce. The location is expected to create strong opportunities for internships, industry partnerships and experiential learning.
The establishment of UNSW Bengaluru also reflects the broader push under India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which encourages leading global universities to set up campuses in India to enhance access to international education and research collaboration.
