Trump nominates Dave Brat as new US ambassador to Australia after long vacancy

US President Donald Trump has nominated former congressman Dave Brat as the next United States ambassador to Australia, filling a key diplomatic post that has remained vacant for more than a year.

The nomination, announced by the White House on Monday (Tuesday AEST), will now be sent to the US Senate for confirmation. If approved, Brat will take up the role in Canberra, restoring a senior diplomatic presence at a time of heightened strategic and political engagement between the two allies.

Brat, a former Republican representative from Virginia, is known as a conservative economist with a PhD in economics and a background in academia. He rose to prominence in 2014 after defeating then-House majority leader Eric Cantor in a shock Republican primary victory, before serving one term in Congress. Following his electoral defeat in 2018, he returned to teaching and policy work.

The appointment comes roughly 15 months into Trump’s current term and follows a prolonged absence of a US ambassador in Australia since the departure of Caroline Kennedy in late 2024. Her exit aligned with the change of administration in Washington, in line with longstanding diplomatic convention.

The vacancy in Canberra has been closely watched, with the absence of a confirmed envoy seen by some analysts as adding pressure to the bilateral relationship during a period of policy differences between the Trump administration and the government of Anthony Albanese.

Despite those tensions, Australia and the United States remain deeply aligned on defence and security through partnerships such as AUKUS, alongside strong economic and intelligence ties. The appointment of a new ambassador is expected to play a key role in managing that relationship on the ground.

Brat’s nomination will now undergo scrutiny in the US Senate, where confirmation hearings will assess his suitability for one of Washington’s most important diplomatic postings in the Indo-Pacific region.
