Senator Pauline Hanson said Australia could no longer ignore what she described as security risks associated with countries affected by terrorism, kidnapping, armed conflict, violent crime, civil unrest, state repression or the collapse of local authority.

Authorities allege the woman travelled to Syria between 2013 and 2014 with others, including a man, to join ISIS. The man is believed to now be incarcerated in a Middle Eastern prison.

The women, aged 53 and 31, were arrested by the Victorian Joint Counter Terrorism Team after arriving at Melbourne Airport.

A Corrective Services NSW spokesperson said all correctional officers undertake compulsory training to mitigate the risk of radicalisation within prisons

“It beggars belief that the Police Minister does not know where these individuals will be settled, or which communities will be directly impacted.”

The incident has triggered alarm after it emerged that Australian passports had already been issued to the group

The man had applied for an Australian passport and researched flights from Brisbane to Türkiye, intending to cross illegally into Syria.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his condolences, condemning the violence and affirming solidarity with the UK.

The judge found Khalil had “willfully misrepresented material facts” in his application to adjust immigration status and denied his request for a waiver.

Abbott accused Albanese of “being cute with the truth” by denying the government’s role while police prepared to receive the group.
