Overseas-born individuals now make up 32 per cent of the country’s estimated population of 27.6 million—approaching the historic peak of 32.4 per cent recorded in 1891.
Across Australia, the top five international visitor markets in the year ending March 2026 were New Zealand, China, the United Kingdom, the United States and India.
The expansion comes alongside a broader package of increases to social security payments and family assistance measures that will take effect from July 1.
