An Indian-origin Melbourne man has been charged with murder after his wife was found dead at their family home in Vermont, in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.

Srinivas Achanta, 39, appeared briefly in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday, three days after emergency services were called to the Delatite Court property about 10pm on July 7.

As per reports, Police allege Mr Achanta fatally stabbed his wife, Lavanya Achanta, 39, inside the home. Ms Achanta was found deceased at the scene, while two children were located inside the property unharmed, according to police.

Mr Achanta was arrested at the scene and taken to hospital under police guard before being interviewed by homicide detectives. He was later charged with murder.

Appearing in court on Friday, Mr Achanta was not required to enter a plea. Police sought additional time to prepare and serve their case on his legal representatives.

He was remanded in custody and is due to return to court on November 13.

Neighbours described the family as quiet and private, saying they had moved into the Vermont neighbourhood with their two children around two years ago.

Homicide detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Ms Achanta’s death.
