Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives Milton Dick has welcomed representatives of the Federation of Nepalese Community Associations of Australia to Parliament House, highlighting the growing contribution of the Nepali Australian community.
Dick said Nepali Australians were now among the country’s fastest-growing migrant communities.
“Here in Australia, Nepalis are our fastest growing migrant community with over 180,000 Nepalese Australians and more than 60,000 Nepali students,” Dick said.
“We recognise the important contribution Nepalese Australians make across the country.”
The meeting brought community representatives to the Australian Parliament as the Nepali Australian community continues to expand across Australia, with strong participation in business, education, health, professional services and community organisations.
Dick has previously played a role in strengthening Australia-Nepal parliamentary ties.
In October 2023, he led the first-ever multi-partisan Australian parliamentary delegation to Nepal. The delegation visited the country from 3 to 7 October to mark more than 60 years of diplomatic relations between Australia and Nepal.
The visit included discussions with Nepali political leaders and government representatives on bilateral relations, trade, education, development and people-to-people links.
Australia and Nepal established diplomatic relations in 1960, and the relationship has since developed through education, migration, tourism, development cooperation and growing community connections.
The growing number of Nepali Australians and international students has also strengthened people-to-people links between the two countries.
