Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has extended his best wishes to Hindu, Jain, Sikh and Buddhist communities celebrating Diwali and Deepavali 2026, describing the festival as a celebration of light, unity and the triumph of goodness, knowledge and truth.

In his official Diwali message, Albanese said the festival represented an ancient tradition of spiritual and personal renewal, underpinned by generosity and the embrace of new beginnings.

“For Hindu, Jain, Sikh and Buddhist communities, Diwali is deeply embedded in culture – an ancient tradition of spiritual and personal renewal, underpinned by the cultivation of generosity and the embrace of new beginnings,” he said.

The Prime Minister said the festival’s message extended beyond religious and cultural boundaries, encouraging compassion, understanding and unity.

“With love and unity at its luminous heart, it is a message – and an invitation – that is as welcome now as it has ever been.”

Albanese said the lighting of diyas, candles and lanterns reflected shared hopes for humanity and the belief that goodness, knowledge and truth would prevail.

He also highlighted Diwali’s growing place in Australia’s multicultural identity, saying the celebrations brought people from different backgrounds together through the bonds of family, friendship and community.

“We can all take pride and joy in just how intrinsically Diwali has become part of the face of modern Australia.”

The Prime Minister acknowledged the contributions of communities that have maintained their cultural heritage while helping shape Australia’s national identity through generations of hard work, aspiration and commitment to the country.

“As you honour the birthright of your heritage, you add so much to the land that is your home,” he said.

Concluding his message, Albanese wished those celebrating Diwali hope and optimism for the future.

“May your Diwali celebrations uplift you in hope for a brighter future.”
