Prime Minister Albanese and his Fijian counterpart, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, signed the Vuvale Union and the Ocean of Peace Alliance in Suva on Monday, elevating bilateral ties through a comprehensive framework covering security, economic cooperation and people-to-people links.
The Ocean of Peace Alliance establishes Fiji’s first mutual defence treaty, committing both nations to assist one another in times of greatest need. Australia said it is only the fourth such alliance it has entered into.
The agreements also become the first treaties to give practical effect to the Pacific Islands Forum’s Blue Pacific Ocean of Peace Declaration, strengthening regional cooperation against shared challenges including transnational crime and climate change.
“The signing of these two agreements represents one of the most significant endeavours Australia has undertaken with any country,” Prime Minister Albanese said.
“This level of ambition is possible because Australia and Fiji are Vuvale – family – with a relationship grounded in trust, loyalty, understanding and respect.”
He added that Australia was honoured when Prime Minister Rabuka proposed Fiji’s first alliance, saying the Vuvale Union would deepen cooperation across security, economic development and people-to-people connections.
Earlier in the day, Albanese was accorded a traditional veiqaravi vakavanua welcome ceremony at Suva’s Grand Pacific Hotel, where he thanked the Government and people of Fiji for their warm hospitality.
The two leaders later held bilateral talks before addressing a joint press conference.
During the visit, Albanese was also awarded the Honorary Companion of the Order of Fiji, the country’s highest civilian honour, in recognition of his contribution to Australia–Fiji relations and Pacific regional security.
As part of the official programme, Albanese launched the Pacific Australia Skills Programme in Fiji and officially opened the Vuvale Skills Hub, a refurbished trades training facility designed to strengthen workforce capability and create new economic opportunities across Fiji and the wider Pacific.
The agreements underscore Australia’s continued focus on strengthening partnerships across the Pacific as Canberra seeks closer cooperation with regional neighbours on security, economic resilience and sustainable development.
