Perth-based theatre group Rangmanch will present The Mystic Lamp | अद्भुत चिराग, a bilingual theatrical production based on the work of acclaimed Indian author Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay.

Directed by Supriya Guha, the play is set in 1990s Kolkata and follows an ordinary man struggling with financial hardship, family responsibilities and unfulfilled ambitions — until the arrival of a mysterious genie changes his life.

Blending fantasy, humour, emotion and social commentary, the production explores ambition, material desire, relationships and the meaning of happiness.

Rangmanch said the production continues its effort to bring celebrated Indian stories to Perth audiences while creating opportunities for multicultural storytelling across languages and communities.

The group previously staged productions including Byomkesh Bakshi and Jallianwala Bagh, which received strong support from Perth audiences.

Four performances

The production will be staged at Nexus Theatre, Murdoch University, with separate Hindi and English performances.

Hindi: Saturday, 3 October 2026 – 3 pm–5 pm and 6 pm–8 pm

English: Sunday, 4 October 2026 – 3 pm–5 pm and 6 pm–8 pm

Venue: Nexus Theatre, Murdoch University, 90 South Street, Murdoch, WA 6150.

Tickets are available through Klub GDC.

The production offers Perth audiences an opportunity to experience an Indian literary classic through both Hindi and English, while exploring universal questions about wealth, ambition, family and happiness.
