Opposition Leader Angus Taylor has praised India’s rise as a global power and the contribution of Australians of Indian heritage in a message marking India’s 80th Independence Day.
Taylor said India’s journey from independence in 1947 to becoming the world’s largest democracy and one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies was “inspiring”.
He said India now played a leading role in the security, stability and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific.
“The Coalition remains steadfast in its commitment to elevating Australia and India’s bilateral relationship,” Taylor said, referring to his recent welcome to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Australia.
Taylor also praised the contribution of Australians of Indian ancestry across Australian society, including business, science, medicine, education, the arts and sport.
“On this anniversary of India’s independence, we celebrate the extraordinary achievements of modern India, acknowledge the enduring friendship between our two countries, recognise the contributions of generations of Australians of Indian ancestry, and look forward to strengthening the deep bonds between Australia and India.”
Taylor said the anniversary was an opportunity for Australians to celebrate India’s history while looking towards an even stronger bilateral relationship.
