27-year-old man has expressed remorse after being charged over the death of a three-year-old girl who was struck by a car in a driveway in western Sydney.

Sandip Adhikari appeared at Burwood Local Court on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after the tragedy in Auburn. He was charged with negligent driving occasioning death and has not yet entered a plea.

As per Daily Mail, Adhikari was confronted by reporters as he left court, with supporters accompanying him.

It is reported that he attempted to cover his face with a sheet of paper.

“No questions, thanks. Of course I’m very sorry.”

Daily Mail reports that his lawyer, Danny Eid, described the case as “a very, very sad case”.

“He’s very, very stressed and worried about the family, worried about their welfare,” Eid told media.

“He’s asked me to relay his deep sadness to the whole family who have lost a beautiful young child.”

Emergency services were called to Normanby Road, Auburn, shortly after 2pm on Tuesday following reports that a child had been hit by a car while playing in a driveway.

The girl was taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition but died several hours later.

Adhikari was not injured in the incident and was taken to Auburn Hospital for mandatory testing before being taken to Auburn Police Station, where he was charged.

He remains on bail and is due to return to court on October 27.
