Victorian Premier Ben Carroll has unveiled a reshaped Labor Cabinet, promising a “new direction” for the state with a smaller ministry, a dedicated artificial intelligence portfolio and renewed focus on cost of living, healthcare, education and community safety.
Mr Carroll said reducing the size of the Ministry was an immediate step to save taxpayers’ money and ensure government spending delivered greater value for Victorians.
“My team is experienced and united, focused on getting things done,” Mr Carroll said.
The new Cabinet includes a dedicated Minister for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Economy, with Anthony Carbines appointed to lead the portfolio. The role will focus on supporting innovation, attracting investment and ensuring AI development remains ethical and responsible.
Mr Carbines will also take on the portfolios of Major Events, Medical Research and Economic Development, while retaining responsibility for Racing and serving as Leader of the House.
Deputy Premier Gabrielle Williams will become Minister for Education, Skills and Training, First Peoples, and Women and Gender Equality, while Colin Brooks moves into the role of Treasurer and Minister for Industrial Relations.
The reshuffle sees Steve Dimopoulos appointed Minister for WorkSafe and the TAC, Equality and Sport, while Paul Edbrooke takes responsibility for Police, Emergency Services, Crime Prevention and Multicultural Affairs.
In other major portfolio changes, Ingrid Stitt becomes Minister for Health, Mental Health and Ambulance Services, while Jaclyn Symes takes charge of Energy and Resources, Climate Action, Environment and the State Electricity Commission.
Nick Staikos has been appointed Minister for Housing, Building and Precincts, Homelessness and Seniors, as the government faces ongoing pressure over housing affordability.
Melissa Horne will oversee Jobs, Industry and Advanced Manufacturing, Defence Industry, Ports and Freight, while Natalie Suleyman will lead Trade, Tourism and Investment, Small and Family Business and Veterans.
The new Cabinet also includes Tim Richardson as Minister for Local Government, Consumer Affairs and Renters, and Michaela Settle as Minister for Water, Agriculture and Rural and Regional Development.
Mr Carroll said the government would remain focused on key priorities.
“My Cabinet will stay focused on what matters most – cost of living, keeping Victorians safe and delivering great healthcare and education,” he said.
The new Carroll Ministry begins work as the Victorian Government seeks to rebuild public confidence while managing economic pressures, major infrastructure commitments and rapid changes in technology, including the growing impact of artificial intelligence.
