An Indian-origin woman has described a frightening assault at the Townsville City bus hub, prompting renewed concerns about safety around public transport stops and calls for stronger protection for commuters.

Karishma Gautam was reportedly on her way to work when four children allegedly began throwing ice cream and cold drink cans at her.

The incident left Gautam with injuries, while blood and ice cream were reportedly left at the scene following the alleged attack.

“It was definitely a very emotionally traumatising incident … physically and mentally,” Gautam said.

Residents have expressed concerns about safety around Townsville’s bus stops, with calls for authorities to strengthen security and protection for commuters, particularly amid broader concerns about youth-related offending.

The alleged assault comes as Townsville faces renewed debate over youth crime and calls for tougher measures following a series of serious offences involving children across Queensland.

Queensland Police continue to investigate youth-related offences across the state, with authorities urging members of the public to report incidents and provide information that could assist investigations.
