Indian-origin shooter Avtar Nanrey has made Canadian shooting history after being crowned the 2026 Canadian Fullbore National Champion.

Nanrey, from Brampton, Ontario, won both the prestigious Governor General’s Prize and the Canadian Gold Cross Grand Aggregate at the 142nd Canadian Fullbore National Championship, becoming only the second Canadian to win both titles at the same competition.

He recorded a score of 691.65 in the Grand Aggregate and produced an exceptional performance in the Governor General’s Prize, dropping just one point.

Nanrey also claimed the prestigious Lieutenant Governor’s Prize at the Ontario championship, completing a remarkable run across the two competitions.

The achievement adds to an already strong record for Nanrey in Canadian target shooting.

Results published by the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association show him among the leading competitors at previous national fullbore championships, including a second-place finish in the 2025 DCRA Target Rifle National Championship.

The international team matches at this year’s championship were dominated by the Great Britain Rifle Team, which completed a clean sweep of the America Team Match, Commonwealth Team Match and Canada Match.

The Dominion of Canada Rifle Association, founded in 1868, described Nanrey’s achievement as another remarkable chapter in Canada’s long sporting tradition.

The championship was held at Canadian Forces Base Borden from August 18 to 23, following the Ontario Provincial Rifle Championship from August 15 to 17.
