A 46-year-old Indian national has been charged by NSW Police over allegations he fabricated injuries sustained in the December 2025 Bondi Beach terror attack to claim compensation, and is now being held in immigration detention pending the outcome of his criminal proceedings.
As per SMH, Simexwell Cyril was arrested by NSW Police Homicide Squad detectives at Parramatta Police Station on Tuesday and charged with publishing false or misleading material to obtain an advantage and making a false representation that resulted in a police investigation.
Police allege Cyril claimed he had been struck by shrapnel during the attack but was not injured and was not in Bondi Beach when the shooting occurred.
The NSW Government established a $35,000 lump-sum support payment for eligible victims of the December 14 attack, which killed 15 people, including a 10-year-old girl, and injured dozens of others.
Cyril was granted conditional bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court on November 18. However, Australian Border Force officers took him into custody after he was found to have overstayed his visa.
He was transferred to Villawood Immigration Detention Centre and faces deportation after his criminal matters are finalised, according to media reports.
