India visa services in Australia suspended from 1 July amid VFS contract uncertainty

on

All India visa services handled through VFS Global in Australia are understood to be suspended from Wednesday, 1 July 2026, until further notice, amid uncertainty over the company’s renewed contract with India’s Ministry of External Affairs.

The Australia Today understands the disruption is linked to a court order in India affecting the renewal or implementation of VFS Global’s contract for the Ministry’s Australia operations.

Official public notices confirming the full operational impact were not immediately available at the time of publication.

The development will affect applicants using VFS Global’s India Passport and Visa Services Centres in Australia for visa-related services, as well as people with upcoming appointments or pending applications.

The Ministry of External Affairs’ own outsourced Consular, Passport and Visa services list, updated in June, shows Australia’s CPV services were outsourced to VFS Global with the contract listed as expiring on 30 June 2026.

The suspension comes after a fresh outsourcing process for CPV services in Australia. Tender material issued by Indian missions in Australia referred to the outsourcing of Consular, Passport and Visa services at the High Commission of India in Canberra and Consulates General in Australia.

A tender result notice published in April showed VFS Global had been declared the L1 bidder for the Australia CPV outsourcing contract, meaning it had emerged as the lowest eligible financial bidder in that process.

The Australia Today understands a court order in India has now placed a stay affecting the renewal of that contract, creating uncertainty over the continuation of VFS-handled visa services in Australia from 1 July.

Publicly accessible court material reviewed by The Australia Today includes a March 2026 Delhi High Court judgment involving challenges to several CPV outsourcing tenders, including Australia-related proceedings. In that judgment, the court dismissed the petitions before it and vacated interim orders, while also noting the public interest in avoiding disruption to services for the Indian diaspora.

However, the specific fresh order understood to be affecting the Australia contract renewal was not available in public records reviewed at the time of publication.

VFS Global’s Australia-facing India services website has continued to host information for visa, passport, OCI and miscellaneous consular services, including centre appointment information across major Australian cities.

The Australia Today is given to understand that appointments, applications already lodged, passport returns, OCI-related services, or urgent travel cases will be affected by the suspension.

The development is likely to cause concern among members of the Indian diaspora, Australian citizens travelling to India, business travellers, students, and families with planned travel during the July school holiday period.

India’s official visa portal continues to direct applicants separately to regular visa and eVisa application pathways, with eVisa services managed through the Bureau of Immigration under India’s Ministry of Home Affairs.

Applicants are advised to check official updates from the High Commission of India in Canberra, Indian Consulates in Australia, VFS Global, and the official Indian visa portal before attending appointments or making travel plans.

The Australia Today has sought further clarity on the status of services, the impact on existing applications, and the expected timeline for resumption.

This is a developing story. The Australia Today will keep readers updated as more information becomes available.
