Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has made history, with her government becoming the longest continuously serving government in the history of the Italian Republic.

Meloni’s government reached 1,413 consecutive days in office on September 4, 2026, exceeding the previous record of 1,412 days held by Silvio Berlusconi’s second government, which served from June 2001 to April 2005.

Meloni became Italy’s first woman prime minister after her coalition won the 2022 general election. She has remained in office since October 2022, leading a coalition that includes Brothers of Italy, Forza Italia and the League.

The milestone is notable in Italy, which has experienced frequent changes of government since becoming a republic in 1946. The country has had 68 governments and 31 prime ministers during that period, with the average government lasting about 14 months.

Meloni acknowledged the record on Friday, saying that stability should not be viewed simply as a record but as a condition that allows a country to plan, make decisions and fulfil its commitments.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi were among the first prominent global leaders to congratulate Meloni on the milestone.

Modi called her his “friend” and said the achievement reflected the trust and confidence of the Italian people in her leadership. He also highlighted her contribution to strengthening the India-Italy Special Strategic Partnership.
