Melissa Doyle AM has been appointed the new Chair of the National Australia Day Council Board, with the former television presenter and journalist set to begin a three-year term this month.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese welcomed Doyle’s appointment, describing her as “an extraordinary Australian who has contributed greatly to our community”.
“I warmly welcome her appointment to the role as Chair of the National Australia Day Council Board.”
Doyle has more than 30 years of experience in television, journalism and writing and was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2016 Australia Day Honours for her service to the community through broadcast media and charitable organisations.
She is a Director of the Greater Western Sydney Giants Football Club and previously served as Chairperson and Director of the GIANTS Foundation.
Doyle is also National Patron and Ambassador for Make-A-Wish Australia and an Ambassador for the Alannah and Madeline Foundation, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and World Vision.
She has previously supported organisations including Adopt Change, Legacy, the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the Children’s Cancer Institute Australia.
The National Australia Day Council coordinates more than 800 Australia Day events across the country each year and delivers the Australian of the Year Awards.
The Prime Minister also thanked outgoing Chair John Foreman AM, who led the Council from 2023 to 2026.
Assistant Minister Patrick Gorman said Doyle’s career demonstrated a commitment to telling stories about Australians who inspire others.
The appointment comes as the National Australia Day Council prepares for its next programme of Australia Day events and the annual Australian of the Year Awards.
