A Fijian man and two New Zealand citizens have been charged after an alleged assault at the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre in Sydney’s west.

The three men appeared before Fairfield Local Court on 28 August 2026 following an incident at the detention centre on 27 August.

Australian Border Force officers initially referred the matter to the Australian Federal Police for further investigation.

The AFP alleges that the 26-year-old Fijian man approached another man as he entered a common area at the facility and began striking him.

Police further allege that two New Zealand men, aged 37 and 24, then entered the room and kicked and struck the alleged victim multiple times before attempting to restrain him.

All three men were arrested at Villawood in the early hours of 28 August and taken to Cabramatta Police Station.

Each man has been charged with one count of affray and one count of assault causing actual bodily harm in company.

The charges have been laid under NSW criminal law as applied to the Commonwealth detention facility under the Commonwealth Places (Administration of Laws) Act 1970.

The alleged victim received medical treatment at the centre before being taken to Auburn Hospital. He was later discharged and returned to the detention centre.

The three men were remanded in custody and are due to return to Fairfield Local Court on 9 September 2026.
