Fiji has partnered with Australia to develop its first-ever National Standardisation Strategy, a move aimed at strengthening trade, improving consumer protection and boosting the competitiveness of local businesses.
The initiative brings together Fiji’s Ministry of Commerce and Business Development and Standards Australia to create a coordinated framework for developing and implementing standards across key sectors of the economy.
Officials say the strategy will help improve Fiji’s quality infrastructure, support local industries and align national standards with international best practices, enabling businesses to improve product quality, access new markets and build greater consumer confidence.
Permanent Secretary for Commerce and Business Development Dr. Radika Kumar said standards play a vital role in supporting economic growth, innovation and resilience.
“For small island developing states like Fiji, standards are more than technical requirements. They are important tools for innovation, climate resilience, sustainable development and market access,” Dr Kumar said.
The partnership will involve collaboration between government agencies, technical experts and private sector representatives to identify priorities and practical actions that strengthen local production, enhance consumer safety and support exporters seeking opportunities in regional and international markets.
The National Standardisation Strategy is expected to provide a long-term roadmap for Fiji’s standards system, helping ensure products, services and processes meet recognised quality and safety benchmarks.
The Ministry also acknowledged the support of Standards Australia, whose technical expertise is assisting Fiji in modernising its standards framework and building a stronger foundation for sustainable economic development.
Officials say the initiative reflects the growing economic cooperation between Fiji and Australia and highlights the importance of internationally recognised standards in driving trade, investment and consumer trust.
