Fiji has strengthened its diplomatic and community engagement presence in Australia with the appointment of Dr Vilaseri Tuicolo as Fiji’s Honorary Consul to Queensland.
Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka formally commissioned Dr Tuicolo during a ceremony this week, describing the role as one that demands integrity, leadership and a deep commitment to serving both Fiji and the wider community.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Prime Minister Rabuka said the office of Honorary Consul carries significant responsibility and requires an individual who can effectively represent Fiji’s interests while strengthening ties between communities.
He said Dr Tuicolo’s distinguished career as a medical practitioner and his longstanding service to the Fijian community in Queensland made him exceptionally well suited for the role.
“Over many years, Dr Tuicolo has earned the respect of both the Fijian and Australian communities through his contributions to healthcare, community development, and the advancement of the Fijian diaspora,” Prime Minister Rabuka said.
“His appointment recognises not only his professional accomplishments but also his standing as a trusted advocate, bridgebuilder and representative of Fiji’s interests in Queensland.”
Prime Minister Rabuka expressed confidence that Dr Tuicolo would discharge his duties with distinction and dedication while helping to advance Fiji’s diplomatic, economic and community interests in Australia.
He noted that the appointment would further support Fiji’s efforts to strengthen economic, commercial and community engagement throughout Queensland, which is home to a large and vibrant Fijian community.
The Prime Minister also acknowledged the important role played by Dr Tuicolo’s family in supporting his professional achievements and community service.
“No public service is undertaken alone. Behind every successful individual is a family whose support, sacrifice and encouragement make that service possible,” he said.
Accepting the appointment, Dr Tuicolo said he was deeply honoured by the trust placed in him by the Government of Fiji and Prime Minister Rabuka.
He pledged to work towards strengthening people-to-people connections between Fiji and Queensland, promoting trade and investment opportunities, and fostering closer cooperation across a range of sectors.
Dr Tuicolo said he looked forward to serving both Fiji and the Fijian community in Queensland while helping deepen the longstanding relationship between Fiji and Australia.
His appointment comes at a time of growing engagement between Fiji and Australia across areas including trade, education, healthcare, labour mobility, security cooperation and regional development, with Queensland continuing to play a significant role in those connections.
