Victoria has declared the 2026 AFL Grand Final a major event, bringing the state’s anti-scalping laws into effect for the blockbuster clash between the Brisbane Lions and Fremantle Dockers at the MCG on Saturday, 26 September.

Under Victoria’s Major Events Act 2009, tickets to declared major events cannot be advertised for resale or resold for more than 10 per cent above their original price.

Minister for Major Events Anthony Carbines said the laws were designed to protect fans from ticket scalpers seeking to profit from Grand Final demand.

“Our message to scalpers is simple – don’t rip off footy fans because you will be caught and fined.”

Resale advertisements must include the ticket’s original price, resale price and seating location, where available.

Ticket resellers who breach the laws can face penalties ranging from $1,018 to $610,530, depending on the nature and seriousness of the offence.

The Victorian Government is also warning fans about scams and unofficial ticket sellers, noting that buyers may have fewer protections even when a resale ticket is legitimate.

Minister for Consumer Affairs Tim Richardson urged Victorians to remain vigilant when purchasing resale tickets.

“Grand Final fever creates a perfect opportunity for scammers to target excited footy fans, and we’re urging Victorians to stay alert when buying resale tickets.”

Consumers can report suspected ticket scalping or ticket scams to Consumer Affairs Victoria.
