Indian-Australian author Saima Beg’s new children’s book, Home Down Under: Mumbai to Perth, follows young Mira as she navigates the move from the bustling streets of Mumbai to the wide open spaces of Perth.
The 35-year-old artist, who had performed across Australia and New Zealand in 2018, sustained severe head and spinal injuries when his motorcycle reportedly collided with stray cattle on 27 September.
The evening featured inspiring addresses from WA Premier Roger Cook, Consul General of India Kajari Biswas, and other community leaders who lauded the Indian diaspora’s contribution to Western Australia’s multicultural fabric.
The record-breaking Mysuru Dasara drone show dazzled spectators with a tiger artwork and a series of colourful images, including the solar system, Indian soldier, peacock, dolphin, Lord Krishna, Ambari elephant, and Goddess Chamundeshwari.
This is reinforced by the Booker Prize website, which highlights the previous winner (Kiran Desai) and two previously shortlisted authors (Andrew Miller and David Szalay) on the list, while noting that all six authors have long-established literary careers.
Alongside Miss Hibiscus 2025 Rhyelle Aisea (Miss National Fire Authority), Miss Unique Rubber Stamps Temalesi Tuiwalese was named first runner-up, and Miss Leleuvia Resort Tiare Colavoli took second runner-up.
The incident has left the Indian-origin family feeling unsafe in their own home, particularly with a newborn, a toddler, and elderly relatives living with him.
Around 400,000 Indian visitors travelled to Australia in both 2024 and 2025, highlighting the resilience of the market and its growing contribution to the national visitor economy.
