The Waikato sporting community and a Hamilton secondary school are mourning the tragic loss of Indian-origin teenage athlete Bhavreen Kaur, who died suddenly this week at the age of 15 following what sporting officials have described as a medical event.

Kaur, a student at Hillcrest High School, was widely recognised as one of the region’s most promising young athletes, excelling in both squash and hockey while also earning praise for her academic achievements.

As per the Indian Weekender, her sudden passing on Monday has prompted an outpouring of tributes from schools, sporting organisations, teammates, coaches and community groups across New Zealand.

Hillcrest High School principal Christine Williams said the loss had deeply affected the school community.

In a tribute, the school described Kaur as a gifted student and athlete who had become a highly valued member of the school community since joining in Year 9.

“Bhavreen was multi-talented, exceptional in the classroom and an absolute athlete in her chosen fields of sport,” the school said.

“Bhavreen was well-loved by the local squash community and as the captain of the hockey 1st XI her teammates will tell you she was a strong competitor.”

Several sporting organisations, including Squash Waikato, Golden Heritage Empowerment Trust, Te Aroha Squash Club, Hamilton Youth Club and World Squash Development Organisation, also paid tribute to the teenager, describing her as one of Waikato’s leading junior squash players.

“She was determined, hardworking and a pleasure to be around on and off court,” one tribute stated.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to your parents, family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

Squash Waikato confirmed that Kaur’s death followed a medical event, although no further details have been publicly released.

Lugton Park Rackets Club also acknowledged her passing and extended condolences to her family.

“Our thoughts are with Bhavreen’s family at this time. A sad loss for the club.”

Kaur was regarded as a rising talent in both squash and hockey and had earned widespread respect for her dedication, leadership and sporting achievements. As captain of Hillcrest High School’s First XI hockey team, she was admired by teammates for her competitive spirit and commitment both on and off the field.

A private funeral service for Bhavreen Kaur was scheduled to take place in Hamilton on Thursday, as family, friends and members of the wider sporting community gathered to farewell a young athlete whose life and potential touched many across New Zealand.
