The Maribyrnong Sports Academy athlete secured her place in the Australian team after winning the Women’s U20 Pole Vault title at the Australian U20 Athletics Championships, clearing an impressive 4.06 metres.

The national title followed another major milestone just three weeks earlier, when Rungi recorded a personal best clearance of 4.17 metres, underlining her rapid progress and consistency heading into international competition.

Over the past three years, Rungi has established herself as one of Australia’s leading under-20 pole vaulters, consistently finishing among the nation’s top two athletes in her age category.

Her selection means she will wear the green and gold at one of the world’s premier junior athletics events, competing against the best emerging athletes from around the globe.

He said bhajans remained a powerful medium for promoting peace, harmony and cultural understanding while reaffirming the High Commission’s commitment to advancing the Hindi language and Indian culture across Fiji and the Pacific.

The programme featured performances by several local devotional groups, including Bandish Group, Sukoon Group, Hanuman Chalisa Pariwar, His Masters Orchestra, Sound Groove, and the University of the South Pacific Indian Students Association Group.

Blending traditional devotional music with contemporary styles, the performances received enthusiastic applause throughout the evening.

Students and young performers from the University of the South Pacific added a distinctive element to the programme, reflecting growing interest among Fiji’s younger generation in Indian culture, music and traditions.

Certificates of Appreciation were presented to participating bhajan groups, singers and musicians in recognition of their contribution to the inaugural event.

Among those attending were Fiji Hindu Society president Sumanta Rout, India–Fiji Friendship Forum president Sanjay Ambasht, Supreme Fuel managing director Rajesh Patel, and representatives of Indian public sector organisations in Fiji.

The vote of thanks was delivered by High Commission Second Secretary (Hindi and Culture) and Acting Director of the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre Ishwar Singh Yadav, who acknowledged the contributions of performers, volunteers, the University of the South Pacific and community members in making the event a success.

Karthick Thanigaimani, a volunteer with the Country Fire Authority (CFA), will take part in the annual Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb on 12 September, tackling the demanding ascent while carrying approximately 25 kilograms of protective equipment.

The event aims to raise $1 million for Lifeline Australia, the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation and the 000 Foundation, while also raising awareness of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among firefighters and other emergency service personnel.

“On September 12th, I’ll be climbing 28 floors in 25kg of kit and helping to raise $1 million supporting our beneficiaries, Lifeline, Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation and 000 Foundation,” Thanigaimani said.

“This is in addition to supporting PTSD. I kindly request you to help me step up to fight cancer, depression and suicide.”

This year’s climb marks Thanigaimani’s ninth consecutive participation in the event, reflecting his long-standing commitment to supporting first responders and improving mental health awareness.

A software architect by profession, Thanigaimani regularly transitions from his corporate role to frontline emergency response whenever an incident alert is issued.

“I’m usually at work when an alert arrives. It could be a bushfire, a domestic fire, an accident or any other disaster—you can’t predict it,” he shared earlier in a newsletter.

“In that moment, my role changes. I need to act swiftly and my team at Cognizant understands this and fully supports me.”

After notifying his manager, he joins fellow volunteers from the CFA or the State Emergency Service (SES) before responding to emergencies across Victoria.

“When you choose to serve people, you don’t wait for perfect conditions. You simply show up, because someone’s worst day can’t wait.”

Thanigaimani said volunteering had given him a profound sense of purpose since migrating to Australia.

“It all started when I moved to Australia. I wanted to give back to the community that welcomed me.”

He initially served in administrative roles before becoming a firefighter and now holds the rank of Lieutenant, leading volunteer crews during emergency operations.

Over the past decade, he has responded to numerous life-threatening incidents, including bushfires and serious road crashes.

“I’ll never forget the day we pulled an elderly couple from a bushfire in Victoria. Or the time we helped save three lives after a serious car crash.”

Beyond emergency response, Thanigaimani is passionate about improving awareness of PTSD among firefighters and other emergency personnel, who are regularly exposed to traumatic events.

He said the annual stair climb symbolises the physical and emotional challenges firefighters face while helping communities.

Funds raised through the event support crisis intervention, cancer treatment and research, and mental health services for emergency workers and Australians in need.

Community service is also a family commitment. His wife volunteers with the CFA, while their children regularly assist in non-operational community activities.

Thanigaimani hopes his participation will inspire others to contribute to their communities in whatever way they can.

“Over the years, I’ve learned that there’s always someone who needs help,” he said.

“You don’t need a uniform or special skills to lend a hand, and no help is too small—even an hour a month can make an impact.”

The Department of Home Affairs stressed that genuine Home Affairs officers do not visit people’s homes to collect photographs, fingerprints or other biometric information.

“If a community member receives a suspicious visit, call, email, or message claiming to be from the Department of Home Affairs, they should report it to Scamwatch,” the department said in a community alert.

Residents are urged not to provide any information, make payments or allow unknown people claiming to be government officials into their homes.

The department advised community members to:

• Verify any unexpected contact claiming to be from Home Affairs
• Avoid sharing personal or financial details
• Report suspicious approaches to local authorities and Scamwatch

The warning comes amid broader concerns about scams targeting multicultural communities, particularly those involving immigration, visas and government services.

Criminals often exploit people’s concerns about their residency status, citizenship applications or legal obligations by pretending to represent official agencies.

The Department of Home Affairs has encouraged anyone who receives suspicious communication or a visit from someone claiming to be a government officer to report it through the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s Scamwatch service at www.scamwatch.gov.au.

The post Fake Home Affairs officers knock on doors, Australians warned of new immigration scam first appeared on The Australia Today.

Rahul Shamrao Kalokhe was returned to India on Thursday after being traced and arrested in Fiji based on an Interpol Red Notice issued at the request of Maharashtra Police, according to India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The CBI said Kalokhe was wanted in connection with an alleged investment fraud case registered by Pune City Police, where he is accused of cheating a businessman of Rs23.8 million (approximately A$555,000).

Investigators allege that Kalokhe promised investors monthly returns of between 6 and 8 per cent through stock market investment schemes before allegedly misappropriating the funds for personal gain.

Following the alleged offence, authorities said Kalokhe fled India to avoid investigation and legal proceedings.

At the request of Maharashtra Police, the CBI, which serves as India’s National Central Bureau for Interpol matters, secured a Red Notice against Kalokhe. The international alert helped authorities locate him in Fiji, where he was subsequently arrested by local officials.

After completing the necessary legal procedures, Kalokhe was deported to India and arrived on 30 July accompanied by a CBI escort team.

The CBI said the operation involved coordination between Indian law enforcement agencies, the Ministry of External Affairs, the Ministry of Home Affairs and Fijian authorities.

“Following the commission of the offence, the subject absconded to evade investigation and legal proceedings,” a CBI spokesperson told local media.

Authorities allege Kalokhe and his associates attracted investors by offering unusually high and guaranteed returns through investment schemes, collecting substantial amounts of money before allegedly diverting the funds.

A second cheating case has also been registered against him by police in Ahilyanagar, Maharashtra.

The CBI said international cooperation through Interpol channels has helped India secure the return of more than 170 wanted fugitives in recent years.

The agency continues to work with domestic and international partners to track individuals accused of financial crimes who attempt to evade prosecution by moving overseas.

The new system will allow people who call Triple Zero (000) during a mental health crisis to be connected with dedicated mental health professionals who will assess their needs, provide immediate support and connect them with appropriate care.

The reform aims to ensure people receive the “right care at the right time” by reducing reliance on emergency responses that may not always be suited to mental health situations.

NSW Mental Health Minister Rose Jackson said the reform represented a major step towards improving crisis care.

“When someone is experiencing a mental health crisis, they need the right care from the right people and that’s exactly what this new health-led responder approach will do,” she said.

“The important thing to remember is that there is no change for the community — you should still call Triple Zero (000) in an emergency. The difference is that now, during a mental health crisis, people can be connected with clinical support earlier.”

Under the new model, callers may be connected to counselling services, community mental health support or specialist Mental Health Acute Assessment Teams operated through NSW Ambulance.

The NSW Government said community and emergency worker safety would remain the highest priority, with NSW Police continuing to attend incidents where police intervention is required.

The funding will establish a statewide Virtual Mental Health Hub within NSW Ambulance and create eight Mental Health Acute Assessment Teams across high-need areas of NSW.

Each specialist team will include a paramedic and a mental health nurse who will provide in-person support, assess people experiencing crisis, connect them with ongoing care and arrange transport to health facilities where required.

The Virtual Mental Health Hub will provide real-time clinical advice to frontline responders, helping emergency workers make safer and more informed decisions.

More than 100 new full-time positions will be created as the program is progressively introduced.

The new approach follows recommendations from the Bondi Junction Coronial Inquest, the NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into community mental health care and a NSW Police review of mental health incident responses, all of which called for stronger health-led responses and improved coordination between services.

NSW Health said the model was developed after consultation with mental health consumers, carers, clinicians, advocacy groups, unions, Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations, service providers and emergency agencies.

The approach has also been informed by the United Kingdom’s Right Care Right Person program, which focuses on ensuring people receive support from the most appropriate service.

Police and Counter-terrorism Minister Yasmin Catley said police would continue to respond whenever public safety required their involvement.

“Police will always respond when a police response is required to ensure public safety and the safety of those responding. That does not change.”

The NSW Government said the new model would complement existing programs, including the Police Ambulance and Clinical Early Response (PACER) program, which supports police and paramedics responding to mental health incidents.

The post Mental health crises to receive clinical response under NSW’s new $270 million emergency model first appeared on The Australia Today.

The proposal was raised during a recent community consultation in Nasoso, Nadi, where residents and police argued that stronger internet restrictions could help protect vulnerable children from sexual abuse within their own homes.

As per the Fiji Times, Sergeant Semi Meru of the Namaka Police Station said the suggestion came from a local airline pilot during discussions with the community.

“There are a lot of pilots in Nasoso, and one of the pilots suggested that if England blocked watching of pornographic movies, then why can’t we?” Sgt Meru said.

“The pilot was sharing that in England, if you go to Google, and if you start to search pornography, it is totally blocked.”

The call comes as Fiji records an alarming number of sexual offences involving family members.

According to mid-year statistics released by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, there were 37 rape or sexual assault cases involving relatives or people in domestic relationships between January and June this year.

The figures include seven cases involving the sexual abuse of stepchildren.

In one of the most disturbing incidents, a 56-year-old man was charged in June with allegedly raping his 13-year-old biological daughter.

Sgt Meru said the growing number of father-daughter sexual abuse cases highlighted the need for urgent intervention and claimed unrestricted access to online pornography was contributing to the problem. “If a father rapes his own daughter, then we know maybe the father was watching it,” he said.

He warned that exposure to explicit online material could distort behaviour and increase the risk of opportunistic abuse within households.

“Fiji may be a small nation, but the rise of sexual offences within families is a major crisis that requires immediate, nationwide intervention.”

The concerns are not new.

Fiji has one of the highest rates of mobile internet usage in the Pacific, but women’s advocates have long warned that increased access to online pornography has coincided with growing levels of sexual violence and easier exposure of children to explicit material.

The Fijian Government has previously indicated it wanted to begin a national discussion about pornography and online safety, including the introduction of stronger regulations.

Former National Taskforce to Address Pornography member and Government MP Manoa Kamikamica has welcomed recent safety initiatives by Meta, including new tools aimed at tackling harmful content, fake accounts, sextortion and online exploitation.

He told FBC that technology companies taking greater responsibility was a positive first step, but stronger local laws remained necessary.

“Certainly, the news that Meta is introducing new tools that will restrict, I guess, the first line of defence would be very welcome,” Kamikamica said.

“And hopefully joined with the initiatives that Honourable Tabuya and Honourable Naivalurua are pushing forward around Facebook controls, TikTok controls, etc. This will all create a healthier environment for our children, and that would be a very positive development.”

Kamikamica said legislative reforms recommended by the National Taskforce to Address Pornography remained a priority and expressed hope they would be implemented before the end of the current parliamentary term.

He said a combination of stronger regulation, improved online safeguards and greater public awareness would be critical to protecting children from exploitation and reducing the harm associated with online pornography.

The renewed calls come as authorities continue to grapple with rising concerns about online exploitation, child protection and domestic sexual violence across Fiji.

The initiative aligns with the India STEM Foundation’s mission to democratise STEM education by providing schools with free STEM Innovation Kits designed to encourage hands-on learning, robotics and coding.

Each eligible school receives a STEM Innovation Kit featuring Arduino Uno and Nano microcontrollers, ultrasonic and infrared sensors, servo and DC motors, breadboards, jumper wires and other components that enable students to design, build and test robotic solutions.

The program particularly targets schools that do not already have robotics laboratories, STEM facilities or Atal Tinkering Labs, helping bridge gaps in access to technology-driven education.

Students are encouraged to apply their skills through the World Robot Olympiad (WRO), with participating schools receiving one complimentary team entry in the Future Innovators category. This year’s theme, “The Future of Robots,” challenges students to develop robotic solutions for real-world problems.

The initiative also supports teachers through certified STEM training programs, with schools whose educators complete India STEM Foundation certification receiving preference for future opportunities.

By combining robotics, innovation and experiential learning, the project also supports the goals of India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises critical thinking, creativity and technology-enabled education.

The Australia-funded robotics lab is expected to help students develop practical problem-solving skills while strengthening educational collaboration between Australia and India.

The proposed refinery, to be developed by Perdaman in Karratha, is expected to create thousands of jobs, boost regional manufacturing and improve domestic supplies of diesel and other transport fuels, particularly for Western Australia’s regional communities.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Western Australian Premier Roger Cook announced the initiative during a visit to Perdaman’s Project Ceres in Karratha, describing the proposal as a key part of Australia’s efforts to bolster energy sovereignty amid ongoing global geopolitical tensions.

Prime Minister Albanese said recent instability in the Middle East highlighted the importance of strengthening Australia’s domestic fuel production capability.

“The longer war in the Middle East goes on the greater the impact on Australia will be, and my Government will continue to do everything we can to shield Australia from the worst effects – and set us up for the future,” Albanese said.

“My Government’s working to advance Australia’s interests – not just in this crisis but going forward as well to ensure we can meet future challenges.”

The refinery proposal is the first project to be supported under the Albanese Government’s A$10 million feasibility program for new or expanded fuel refining capability and complements the Federal Government’s broader A$15 billion fuel security package.

Australia currently operates only two oil refineries—in Brisbane and Geelong—after four refineries closed under the former Coalition government.

If built, the Perdaman refinery would mark the country’s first new large-scale petroleum refinery in more than six decades and form part of both the Federal Government’s Future Made in Australia agenda and the Western Australian Government’s Made in WA strategy.

Perdaman‘s Founding Chairman and Managing Director Vikas Rambal has more than 30 years’ experience in business and a proven track record in delivering world-class businesses. Born in Delhi, India, Rambal qualified as a chemical engineer specialising in petrochemicals, spending his formative years at Bharat Petroleum (formerly Shell).

In 2023, Perdaman reached a major milestone with the commencement of construction of its Ceres Urea Plant in Karratha. The project is designed to use Australian natural gas to produce around 2.3 million tonnes of urea annually, supporting global food security while promoting sustainable agriculture and regional economic growth.

The Ceres project has received approximately A$475 million in government loans and is expected to create around 2,500 construction jobs and 200 permanent operational positions, while generating an estimated A$8.5 billion in public economic benefits.

Premier Roger Cook said expanding refining capacity would help secure fuel supplies for Western Australia’s economy and regional communities.

“This includes diesel to support the regional communities which drive WA’s economy and which have been most at risk amid this conflict,” Cook said.

“While many Western Australians remain anxious about our State’s fuel security, we are doing everything we can to address these concerns by working with the Commonwealth to provide steady and experienced leadership and continue delivering our Made in WA plan.”

Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen said expanding Australia’s sovereign refining capability was a prudent response to increasingly fragile global energy supply chains.

“At a time when overseas conflicts demonstrate the fragility of energy supply chains, investing in further onshore sovereign fuel refining capability is a sensible and prudent response to secure our energy security,” Bowen said.

The broader A$15 billion fuel security package includes the establishment of a government-owned Australian Fuel Security Reserve, expanded fuel and fertiliser storage infrastructure, increased minimum fuel stockholding obligations, temporary fuel excise relief and interest-free loans through the National Reconstruction Fund to strengthen critical manufacturing and logistics supply chains.

The governments said consultation on the refinery proposal would continue following completion of the pre-feasibility study, with the project expected to play a central role in Australia’s long-term energy resilience and manufacturing capability.

Baba Ragho Vishnu Kuti has remained a significant centre of worship and heritage preservation since the arrival of Sant Shree Baba Ragho Dass Ji during the Girmit era.

Baba Ragho Dass Ji arrived in Sawani on 28 March 1901 and dedicated his life to spiritual service, promoting Sanatan Dharma and supporting the Hindu community in Fiji. His samadhi remains preserved at the Kuti, which continues to attract devotees.

Speaking at the event, Fiji’s Minister for Defence and Veterans Affairs Pio Tikoduadua said the temple’s 125-year history demonstrated that faith could unite communities and strengthen understanding rather than create division.

Tikoduadua said national security was built not only through defence institutions but also through trust, inclusion and strong communities.

“Every citizen contributes to Fiji’s security by standing against fear, division and prejudice, and by supporting one another.”

He urged Fijians to leave future generations a stronger, fairer and more united nation, saying the values upheld by the pioneers who established the temple 125 years ago continue to shape Fiji today.

Assoc. Prof. Shailendra Singh said the celebrations reflected the deep roots and contribution of the Indo-Fijian community to Fiji’s national story.

“The recent Ram Leela commemorations at the 125-year-old Baba Ragho Vishnu Kuti Temple in Sawani were a powerful reminder of the enduring Indo-Fijian presence in Fiji, our deep roots, and our contribution to the nation.”

He added that social cohesion and inclusion remained central to Fiji’s future, highlighting the importance of policies that recognise the contribution of all communities.

The celebrations also coincided with wider discussions about Fiji’s national identity, security and diaspora engagement, including the implementation of recommendations from Fiji’s National Security and Defence Review and the development of a national diaspora policy.

The 125th anniversary celebrations, attended by at least 1500 people, served as a reminder of the role of cultural and religious institutions in preserving heritage while promoting unity, respect and cooperation among Fiji’s diverse communities.

It is reported that around 60 firefighters from the Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) and Country Fire Service (CFS) responded to the fire at Gurudwara Dashmesh Dabar in Virginia after receiving emergency calls at about 10 pm.

The temple operates a free community kitchen (langar) that provides hundreds of free meals every day.

Fire crews battled the intense blaze for several hours before bringing it under control. Authorities said firefighters successfully prevented the fire from spreading to neighbouring properties despite the building being extensively damaged and ultimately collapsing.

A smoke warning was issued for residents in and around Virginia Township, including Old Port Wakefield Road, Sheedy Road, Port Wakefield Highway, Juniper Boulevard and Penfield Road. Residents were advised to avoid the area and remain alert to changing conditions.

Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. No injuries have been reported at this stage, and the cause of the blaze remains unknown.

The destruction of the gurudwara is expected to have a significant impact on the local Sikh community, particularly those who relied on its daily community kitchen and support services.

Police executed 22 search warrants across Windsor, LaSalle, Corunna, Brampton, Kleinburg, Markham and Caledon, leading to the arrests of 19 people, while two suspects remain wanted.

Among those charged are several individuals of Indian origin, including Gagandip Thindal, Simranjit Singh, Kanwarpal Kular, Jatinderpal Singh, Jasvinder Sohi, Tejwinder Sandhu, Harjwinder Sandhu, Tarminder Singh, Gundeep Tariwal, Mehakpreet Singh and Karandeep Singh, alongside other accused from Windsor, Toronto, Barrie, Shelburne, Corunna and Markham.

The 18-month investigation, known as Project Bay, uncovered an alleged cross-border trafficking operation that used commercial trucking routes to move massive quantities of cocaine, methamphetamine and opium between the United States and Canada.

Ontario Provincial Police Chief Superintendent Mike Stoddart said the operation had significantly disrupted organised crime.

“By removing more than a metric tonne of illegal drugs and multiple firearms from circulation, we have significantly disrupted the flow of harmful substances, prevented community harm and removed substantial profits from the criminal economy.”

Investigators seized 973 kilograms of suspected cocaine, 660 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine, 49 kilograms of suspected opium, and 230 oxycodone tablets, along with 17 firearms, including an anti-tank rifle, ammunition, prohibited weapons, luxury jewellery, cash, electronic devices and a vehicle believed to be linked to the criminal enterprise.

Police allege the organisation operated a sophisticated “broker-style” model within the commercial transportation industry, arranging for truck drivers to knowingly transport concealed drugs inside legitimate freight shipments.

Authorities stressed that the overwhelming majority of truck drivers and transport companies operate lawfully and should not be associated with the criminal activity uncovered during the investigation.

The investigation began in January 2025, when the Windsor Police Service launched a probe into suspected drug trafficking. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) joined the investigation the following month, before the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) expanded the operation through its Border Enforcement Security Task Force and Border Drug Interdiction Task Force.

As the investigation widened, the Toronto Police Service, Peel Regional Police, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and several other Canadian and American agencies joined the operation.

Windsor Police Chief Jason Crowley described Project Bay as an example of intelligence-led policing and extensive inter-agency cooperation.

“This investigation dismantled a network that was moving dangerous drugs and firearms into communities across the province and putting public safety at risk.”

Investigators allege the criminal network exploited commercial freight transport to move illicit drugs concealed within legitimate cargo.

The Canada Border Services Agency said border officers remain Canada’s first line of defence against organised crime and drug trafficking.

Regional Director General Michael Prosia revealed that CBSA officers in Southern Ontario have already seized 206 firearms and more than 5,500 kilograms of illegal drugs at land border crossings so far this year.

Peel Regional Police Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich said organised crime groups exploit international transport systems without regard for borders.

“Organized crime operates without regard for jurisdictional boundaries, and Project Bay demonstrates the impact of coordinated, interagency enforcement.”

Police said investigations into the wider trafficking network, including its international supply chains and financial proceeds, remain ongoing. Arrest warrants have been issued for the remaining suspects.

For Malik, the medal marks another milestone in a rapidly rising international career. The 19-year-old gymnast from Blacktown in Sydney’s north-west became the first athlete of Indian heritage to represent Australia in men’s artistic gymnastics at the Commonwealth Games.

Former Chair of Gymnastics Victoria Molina Asthana told The Australia Today that Malik’s achievement was a proud moment for Australia’s multicultural sporting community. “This is a great achievement by the Australian team and comes after a long wait of 16 years. As former chair of Gymnastics Victoria, it is great to see the Australian Men’s Artistic team make this historic debut,” Asthana said.

“I know first-hand the many gruelling hours of practice required for this level of perfection, so it is a remarkable achievement. I am particularly proud to see someone of Indian heritage who has contributed to this medal.”

Asthana added that gymnastics offered an important pathway for young Australians from diverse backgrounds.

“Gymnastics is an amazing foundation sport and well suited for people of Indian heritage who are not inclined towards contact sport.”

Malik delivered one of Australia’s standout performances during the competition, producing a strong high bar routine and scoring 13.450 to qualify for the apparatus final.

He also played a crucial role in the team’s final push on pommel horse, alongside Moore and Hagens, helping Australia hold onto third place after a tense competition.

The event was briefly halted after England gymnast Gabriel Langton suffered a serious fall on high bar, requiring immediate medical attention. During the lengthy delay, Australian gymnast James Hardy helped maintain team morale by bringing out a deck of cards before competition resumed.

The bronze medal was a significant breakthrough for Australian men’s gymnastics, ending a 16-year wait for a Commonwealth Games team medal.

Malik’s journey to the Commonwealth Games stage began at Sydney Hills Gymnastics, where he started training as a child under the guidance of his family and coaches.

His father Rajesh Malik, a former national gymnastics champion in India, introduced him to the sport. His mother Nirja has supported his nutrition, health and training commitments throughout his career.

The young gymnast was named NSW Junior Gymnast of the Year in 2023 and Australian Junior National Gymnast of the Year in 2024. He later joined the Penn State Nittany Lions men’s gymnastics programme in the United States, where he is studying finance.

Malik has trained at an elite level since childhood, averaging more than 20 hours of training each week, increasing to 24–26 hours in preparation for Glasgow.

With ambitions of competing at the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games, Malik’s Commonwealth Games debut represents a significant step in a career that could inspire a new generation of Australian athletes from diverse backgrounds.

The government said the current court system is often too costly and slow, with some workers and small businesses waiting more than two years for disputes to be resolved. In many cases, legal costs can exceed the value of the claim itself.

Prime Minister Albanese said Australians who had been underpaid should not have to wait years for justice. “Australians who have been underpaid hundreds, even thousands, of dollars shouldn’t have to wait years for justice, or be told their case will cost more than their claim,” he said.

“That’s why Labor will fix it – with the Fair Work Court to resolve disputes faster and at lower cost, benefiting employees and employers alike.”

Employment and Workplace Relations Minister Amanda Rishworth said specialist judges with expertise in workplace relations would improve access to justice for both workers and employers.

“A Fair Work Court will make a significant difference to help workers receive the entitlements and pay they worked hard for.”

Attorney-General Michelle Rowland said the new court would create a streamlined pathway for resolving workplace disputes while making the legal system easier to navigate.

The government said it will begin public consultation on the court’s design later this year, seeking feedback from workers, employers, businesses and the legal profession before finalising the proposal.

The planned Fair Work Court would be Australia’s first specialist federal industrial relations court since the former industrial court was abolished in 1997 under the Howard Government.

The post Prime Minister Albanese promises Fair Work Court to deliver quicker, cheaper justice for workers first appeared on The Australia Today.

Sarath Mohandas, 37, was killed after the Tesla Model Y he was driving left the road, crashed into a tree and caught fire at the intersection of Augusta Parkway and Magnolia Drive in Brookwater, southwest of Brisbane, shortly after 1.30am on 19 July 2026.

Emergency services attended the scene, but Mohandas was declared dead.

His wife, Sithara Sivadasan, has shared a heartbreaking tribute, remembering him as her “best friend”, a loving father and the sole breadwinner of their family.

“He worked tirelessly to build a better future for us,” she wrote in a fundraising appeal launched to support the family.

The tragedy came just two months after Sithara and the couple’s two children, aged 10 and four, moved from Kerala, India, to Australia to reunite with Mohandas.

Sithara said she resigned from her secure government job in India so the family could finally live together.

“We moved into a rental home in Augustine Heights, filled with dreams of starting a new life,” she wrote.

“Instead, our world has been shattered beyond words….In an instant, my children lost their loving father, and I lost my life partner.”

The family had only recently celebrated another milestone, purchasing their Tesla Model Y just five weeks before the fatal crash.

In a social media post on 13 June, Sithara shared a video of the vehicle’s delivery and described it as the family’s “newest family member”.

“The kids are already obsessed with the screen, but the Tesla Light Show in the garage definitely stole the spotlight.”

Following the crash, Sithara launched a fundraising appeal to help cover funeral costs, repatriate Mohandas’ body to his hometown of Thrissur in Kerala, and support her children as the family returns to India.

“No words can express the pain of losing Sarath, and no amount of money can replace him,” she wrote.

“Thank you for your prayers, compassion and generosity during the darkest time of our lives.”

The fundraiser said donations would assist with funeral expenses, repatriation costs, travel arrangements and immediate living expenses as Sithara and her children begin rebuilding their lives after the sudden loss.

Mohandas’ death has left his family, friends and the wider Indian-Australian community mourning the loss of a man who had moved to Australia in pursuit of a better future for his family.

The post Indian-origin father-of-two killed in fiery Tesla crash weeks after family reunion in Australia first appeared on The Australia Today.

As per reports in Punjabi media and community group, the deceased has been identified as Sukhjinder Singh Sandhu, originally from Vaironangal village near Batala in Punjab. He had moved to Australia in 2018 and was working as a heavy vehicle driver based in Melbourne.

The fatal crash occurred shortly after 4am on Friday near Breadalbane, about 32 kilometres south-west of Goulburn, while Sandhu was travelling from Melbourne towards Sydney.

According to NSW Police, a B-double truck carrying groceries had suffered mechanical problems and broken down in the left lane of the Hume Highway.

Police told ABC that the driver had exited the vehicle, activated the required hazard warnings and alerted nearby truck drivers over the CB radio.

A short time later, Sandhu’s road train, carrying aerosol cans and other flammable products, collided with the rear of the stationary truck.

The impact sparked a massive explosion, with both trucks becoming engulfed in flames.

Despite desperate attempts by nearby truck drivers to rescue him, the fire spread rapidly, trapping Sandhu inside the cabin. He died at the scene.

The 31-year-old driver of the broken-down B-double sustained minor head injuries and was taken to Yass Hospital in a stable condition, where he underwent mandatory testing.

NSW Police said a report would be prepared for the Coroner.

Firefighters remained at the scene for several hours as the flammable cargo continued to smoulder. The crash temporarily closed the Hume Highway, Australia’s busiest freight corridor linking Sydney and Melbourne, before all lanes were reopened following an extensive clean-up operation.

As per community social media group, friends of Sandhu living in Australia informed his family in Punjab about the tragedy.

His family said he had married about a year ago before returning to Australia to continue working. They also revealed he had spoken with his father by phone shortly before the fatal journey.

The sudden loss has left his family and the local community in deep shock.

The post Young Indian-origin truck driver Sukhjinder Singh Sandhu dies in fiery Hume Highway crash near Goulburn first appeared on The Australia Today.

The funding will support upgrades to the hospital’s Birthing, Maternity and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) following the closure of Healthscope’s private maternity services in 2025, which is expected to result in an additional 250 babies being born at Royal Darwin Hospital each year.

The investment will expand the hospital’s capacity by upgrading birthing suites and maternity wards, co-locating maternity outpatient services, increasing the number of single rooms for mothers, creating more space for families, and improving facilities for clinical staff and equipment.

Prime Minister Albanese said every Australian family deserved access to high-quality maternity care regardless of where they lived. “Having a baby should be a joyful time, and families deserve high-quality care, no matter where they live,” Albanese said.

“This investment is about making sure Territory women and their families can continue to access the care and services they need.”

The Prime Minister said the funding builds on the Government’s broader investment in Northern Territory hospitals, which will receive almost $1 billion in additional funding.

Health Minister Mark Butler said the upgrades would deliver practical improvements for women and newborns.

“By investing in Royal Darwin Hospital, we’re delivering better facilities, greater capacity and stronger support for women at one of the most important moments in their lives.”

Minister for Indigenous Australians Malarndirri McCarthy said the funding would help ensure women across the Territory could continue to access safe and affordable maternity care close to home. “All mothers and mothers-to-be deserve safe, affordable and accessible maternity care,” Senator McCarthy said.

“Our $10 million investment means Territory mums, babies and families can access high-quality maternity care close to home.”

Member for Solomon Luke Gosling said he had promised to secure the funding and welcomed its delivery, while acknowledging the need to restore private maternity services in Darwin. “This investment strengthens public maternity care, but it does not replace the private maternity service Darwin lost,” Gosling said.

“The NT Government now needs to work with private providers to restore that service and give Territory women genuine choice about where they give birth.”

Construction is expected to be completed by late 2027, with the upgraded facilities designed to improve the experience of mothers, babies and families while supporting the Territory’s growing maternity service needs.

Behind the official lunch hosted for Prime Minister Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at Melbourne’s Sofitel Hotel on 9 July was Melbourne-based chef Ujjwal Sarin, better known as Chef Sarin, who was called in at the last minute to prepare the vegetarian menu for the two leaders and dozens of senior officials.

Chef Sarin, who owns Oye Bombay in Altona, said he received the unexpected call from his mentor, Sofitel Melbourne Executive Chef John Savage, while preparing for dinner service at his restaurant on the evening of 8 July.

“John Savage barely made the offer before I handed dinner service over to my staff and rushed to the Sofitel,” Chef Sarin recalled.

With Prime Minister Modi known for following a strict vegetarian diet, the menu required careful planning and authentic preparation.

“I was the main cook, and John Savage and his team helped while I directed the kitchen,” he said.

Chef Sarin explained that authenticity was the highest priority.

“They wanted us to provide very authentic Indian flavours,” he said.

To achieve that, he prepared fresh spice blends rather than relying on pre-mixed seasonings.

“These people were coming from India, so I wanted to provide that special flavour for them.”

By Thursday morning, the dishes were ready before Prime Minister Modi, Prime Minister Albanese and around 60 delegates from both countries arrived for the diplomatic luncheon.

Chef Sarin described the extraordinary security arrangements surrounding the event.

“There were ADF personnel with machine guns and sniffer dogs,” he said, adding that he only caught a glimpse of both leaders from a distance.

The biggest reward came afterwards when he heard the food had been well received.

“I heard the Paneer Butter Masala was a big hit,” he said with a smile.

For Chef Sarin, however, the experience was about far more than cooking for two world leaders.

“It’s not about the money. To do that function successfully was satisfying for me,” he said.

“Australia and India are both my countries, so to cook for the leaders of my countries was a big pleasure.”

The luncheon formed part of Prime Minister Modi’s three-day official visit to Australia from 8–10 July, centred in Melbourne, where he also addressed more than 30,000 members of the Indian diaspora at Marvel Stadium alongside Prime Minister Albanese.

During that address, Modi used food as a metaphor for the India–Australia relationship, saying that while milk, vegetables and lentils may come from Australia, tea and spices remain unmistakably Indian.

The comments resonated with many Indian-Australians who have built lives in Australia while maintaining strong cultural traditions — a philosophy Chef Sarin says was reflected in the meal served during one of the most significant diplomatic engagements of the visit.

The post, shared on July 12 from right-wing podcast platform 2 Worlds Collide, included the phrase “ABC: Albo Importing Indians for Votes” and was linked to commentary about Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s engagement with Indian-Australian communities during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Melbourne.

Senator Price’s office told media that the repost was intended to highlight discussion around ABC commentary on the Prime Minister’s engagement with the Indian diaspora and was not an endorsement of every comment made by the podcast host.

“The repost was not an endorsement of every comment made by the podcast host,” a spokesperson for Senator Price told The Australian.

The spokesperson said Senator Price believed migration policy settings should be debated on their merits, including whether migration levels matched Australia’s housing and infrastructure capacity.

Defending Senator Price, Opposition Leader Angus Taylor said sharing a post did not necessarily mean endorsing every view expressed within it.

Speaking in Melbourne, Taylor said Senator Price, along with other Coalition figures, believed Australia’s immigration policy needed to be carefully managed.

“Jacinta, like me and Jane, believe that immigration policy is hugely important to get right in this country,” Taylor said as per ABC.

“The numbers have been too high and the standards have been too low and the numbers must change.”

The controversy has reignited debate over comments Senator Price made last year, when she was removed from the Coalition frontbench after suggesting Labor’s migration program favoured Indian migrants for electoral purposes. She later clarified her comments but did not apologise.

The latest incident has drawn criticism from the NSW Labor Government, which accused the Coalition of allowing divisive rhetoric targeting the Australian-Indian community.

NSW Premier Chris Minns said in a statement that Australia’s multicultural success was built on the contributions of people from diverse backgrounds.

“New South Wales is the most successful multicultural society in the world. People from every background have helped build this state and we’re stronger because of it,” Minns said.

“Fear and division have never built a better community. If you work hard, contribute to your community and believe in this country, then you belong here.”

Acting NSW Minister for Multiculturalism Kate Washington said claims that Australian-Indians were being “imported” for political purposes were offensive and ignored their contribution to Australia.

“To suggest these Australians are being ‘imported’ for votes is offensive, false and insulting to the hard work, sacrifice and contribution of hundreds of thousands of Australian-Indians.”

The NSW Government said Australian-Indians were making significant contributions across business, healthcare, education, construction and innovation.

Albanese said his government remained committed to meaningful engagement with First Nations Australians and highlighted his long-standing participation in Garma, a major Indigenous cultural and governance forum held in Arnhem Land.

His comments came after criticism from political opponents who argued his decision not to attend Garma contradicted his previous commitment to attend the festival annually while serving as Prime Minister.

Albanese rejected the criticism, saying his broader record demonstrated continued engagement with Indigenous communities and that his schedule included ongoing visits and conversations across regional and remote Australia.

Speaking at the University’s Camperdown campus, Albanese said Australia had an opportunity to shape the future of AI rather than simply respond to technological change.

The Prime Minister announced that a new Office of AI would be established within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet to coordinate the government’s approach and accelerate the implementation of Australian Standards for AI.

“These standards will be clear, consistent and mandatory,” Albanese said, adding that legislation would be introduced early next year.

The proposed framework will establish rules for large-scale data centres, including requirements around energy supply, water efficiency, environmental impact and community consultation. Large data centres will be required to underwrite new power supply and ensure their growth does not place pressure on household energy costs.

Albanese said Australia’s approach would focus on capturing the economic opportunities of AI while maintaining public trust.

“We can bring our enduring values of fairness and opportunity to this task to ensure that AI earns its social licence; driving growth without undercutting conditions, fragmenting our society or damaging our environment.”

The Prime Minister also addressed concerns from Australia’s creative industries, saying writers, musicians, artists and journalists must retain ownership and control over their work. “Australian writers, musicians, artists and journalists must retain ownership and control of their work,” he said.

“Our laws will spell that out, plain as day.”

Following the address, Albanese met with University of Sydney researchers, students and scholars from the Khuda Women in STEM Academy, alongside AirTrunk founder and CEO Robin Khuda.

In a post on LinkedIn, Khuda said the discussion highlighted the importance of preparing young Australians with the skills needed for an AI-driven economy.

“It was a privilege to meet with the Australian Prime Minister and the Khuda Women in STEM Academy Scholars, particularly following his timely address on AI in Australia.”

He said the future of AI depended not only on technology but also on developing a diverse and skilled workforce.

Citing global concerns about gender gaps in STEM education, Khuda noted that women represent only 36 per cent of STEM graduates globally, highlighting the importance of initiatives designed to support girls and young women entering science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.

“The program creates a pathway from Year 7 to industry, because when young people see women thriving in STEM, it broadens their sense of what is possible.”

University of Sydney Provost and Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof. Annamarie Jagose said universities had a critical role in helping Australia navigate the opportunities and challenges created by AI.

She said the University was already transforming teaching, assessment and research practices while developing responsible approaches to AI adoption.

The University’s AI, Trust and Governance Centre is examining emerging challenges around responsible AI development, while researchers are applying AI across fields including healthcare, education, engineering and scientific discovery.

Albanese said Australia’s universities would play a central role in building sovereign capability and ensuring the country remained competitive.

“We want great universities like this one leading the way, and we want more Australian companies and global firms developing AI here to boost our sovereign capability, strengthen our national security and build our economic resilience.”

The Prime Minister said Australia’s ability to succeed in the AI era would depend on investing in technology, skills and people.

“If we set our national standards high, then we can make AI stand for Australia’s interests.”

The Khuda Family Foundation’s $100 million Women in STEM Program, delivered in partnership with the University of Sydney, aims to create pathways from secondary school to industry.

Over the past year, the program recorded more than 6,400 student engagements across six partner schools in Western Sydney, welcomed 141 students into its inaugural Academy, and reported increased confidence and awareness of STEM career pathways among participants.

Minister for Economic Growth and Jobs Steve Dimopoulos launched the strategy, describing international education as one of Victoria’s greatest strengths and a key contributor to the state’s economy.

Launching the strategy, Minister Dimopoulos said Victoria would continue to position itself as a leading global education destination.

“Victoria will remain a global education partner of choice and Labor makes sure all students benefit from a world-class education.”

Victoria remains Australia’s leading destination for international students, with around 322,000 students from approximately 170 countries choosing to study in the state during 2025.

The international education sector generated $17.9 billion in export revenue last year and supported approximately 69,000 jobs, making it one of Victoria’s largest export industries.

The new strategy focuses on improving every stage of the student journey, from attracting students to supporting their wellbeing, inclusion and career opportunities while studying in Victoria.

The government said international students contribute not only economically but also culturally by bringing new ideas, skills and global perspectives that strengthen Victorian communities.

The strategy builds on Victoria’s reputation for world-class education and follows Melbourne once again being named Australia’s best student city and the world’s fifth-best student city in 2026.

The Study with Victoria initiative is backed by $18.6 million over two years through the Victorian Budget 2025–26.

The strategy also expands existing initiatives, including the Study Melbourne Inclusion Program, which helps connect international students with local communities while supporting their health and wellbeing.

It complements the Yes to International Students Fund, which assists Victorian universities and TAFEs to expand their international presence and promote Victorian education globally.

The Minister also used the announcement to criticise the Liberal–One Nation opposition, claiming their policies would threaten Victoria’s international education sector.

“Jess Wilson and her Liberal/One Nation coalition will cut Victoria off from the world, gut 69,000 jobs and destroy Victoria’s largest single export.”

The Victorian Government said the strategy aims to ensure Victoria remains competitive in an increasingly contested global education market while delivering economic benefits for the state and creating a welcoming environment for students from around the world.

Mukerji said that she is “grateful to La Trobe University and to IFFM for this incredible recognition.”

The proposed framework will establish clear rules for large AI data centres, strengthen safeguards for Australian artists and journalists, and create a nationally consistent regulatory system to guide AI development.

The Prime Minister said the framework would ensure Australia shaped the future of AI on its own terms. “This world-leading framework is about Australia choosing to shape the future rather than letting the future of AI shape us,” Albanese said.

“This framework is about protecting our national interests and ensuring certainty for growth, jobs and investment. If we set our national standards high, then we can make AI stand for Australia’s interests.”

Under the new standards, large data centres will be legally required to underwrite their own new electricity generation, pay the full cost of connecting to the grid, reduce electricity use during periods of high demand to improve grid stability, and meet strict water-efficiency requirements.

The Federal Government will also work with state and territory governments to ensure major AI infrastructure is built in appropriate locations with input from local communities.

The Office of AI has been established within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, effective immediately, to oversee implementation of the new standards nationwide.

The Government will present the framework to National Cabinet in August, with legislation expected to be introduced early next year. If passed, it would create what the Government says will be the world’s first legislated regulatory framework specifically governing large AI data centres and AI training.

The standards aim to provide greater certainty for investors while streamlining approvals and compliance processes covering energy, water, safety and environmental requirements.

The Government also pledged stronger protections for Australia’s creative industries, saying Australian writers, artists and journalists should retain ownership and control of their work.

Under the proposed approach, AI companies would not be permitted to use Australian creative works for training AI models without the creator’s control.

The Government also confirmed it would release a whole-of-government AI consumer safety strategy in the coming weeks, building on the recently established AI Safety Institute.

Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science Tim Ayres said the initiative aligned with the Government’s broader Future Made in Australia agenda.

“A Future Made in Australia is all about shaping Australia’s industrial and technological future in the national interest and in the interest of every Australian,” Senator Ayres said.

“That means securing critical AI investments here so Australians shape the future. Australian Standards for AI strengthen Australia’s framework to make sure AI investments are on Australia’s terms and strengthen our resilience, security and economy.”

Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and the Digital Economy Andrew Charlton said Australia had an opportunity to ensure AI delivers broad economic and social benefits.

“Australia has an opportunity to ensure that new technology delivers inclusive, safe and sustainable growth, with shared benefits for our workers, and the community,” Charlton said.

“Establishing a clear and enforceable social licence for AI is fundamental towards achieving this objective.”

The Government says the framework is designed to accelerate economic growth, strengthen Australia’s technological sovereignty and provide confidence for businesses investing in AI while ensuring the technology develops in line with Australian values.
