Australia’s Nepali community thanks Governor-General for support following devastating floods

The Australia Nepal Friendship Society (ANFS) has thanked the Governor-General of Australia for her support and solidarity with the Nepali community following the devastating floods in Nepal.

The Governor-General hosted representatives of the Nepali community at Government House, providing an opportunity for community leaders and organisations to stand in solidarity with those affected by the disaster.

ANFS also invited representatives from across Canberra’s broader Nepali diaspora and community organisations to attend the gathering.

The society expressed its appreciation for the humanitarian and financial assistance provided by the Australian Government, as well as support from multicultural organisations, community groups and individuals across Australia.

ANFS said the response demonstrated the strength of Australia’s multicultural communities and provided reassurance to Nepali Australians affected by the disaster.

During the gathering, ANFS presented the Governor-General with ANFS Friendship Scarves and a report documenting the organisation’s 42-year history and contribution to community harmony and Australia–Nepal friendship.

The society was also presented with a commemorative coin by the Governor-General.

ANFS acknowledged that limited places meant many longstanding contributors to the organisation were unable to attend the event, while recognising their contribution to the society and Canberra’s Nepali community.

“In moments of adversity, the strength of a community is reflected in how we stand together,” ANFS said.

The society said it remained committed to supporting people affected by the floods, bringing the Nepali community together and strengthening the longstanding relationship between Nepal and Australia.

The Australia Nepal Friendship Society is a Canberra-based, non-profit and non-political organisation founded in 1982 to promote welfare and friendship between Nepali and Australians.
