Australia and India concluded an exciting Under-18 bilateral hockey series in Bhopal on Wednesday, with both nations walking away encouraged by the performances of their young players across eight competitive matches.

The series, hosted at the Udhav Das Mehta (Bhai Ji) Central SAI Centre in Bhopal, marked an important milestone for junior hockey development, particularly for Australia, whose U-18 squads were touring internationally for the first time in nearly two decades.

Australia’s U-18 women’s team secured the series 3-1 after winning the opening three matches. They edged India 4-3 in the first game before following it up with a 4-1 victory in the second encounter. The future Hockeyroos then sealed the series with a narrow 2-1 win in the third match.

India’s young women’s side, however, produced a strong response in the final fixture, defeating Australia 4-1 to end the series on a positive note in front of home supporters.

The women’s matches showcased the depth of emerging talent in both countries, with Australia displaying strong defensive organisation and clinical finishing, while India demonstrated growing confidence and attacking intent as the series progressed.

The men’s series ended evenly, with both teams recording one win each while two matches finished in draws, highlighting how closely matched the sides were throughout the week.

The opening men’s match ended 2-2 as both teams traded goals in a fast-paced contest. Australia then claimed the second game 3-1 with a disciplined performance before India bounced back strongly in the third encounter, registering an impressive 6-3 victory in one of the most entertaining matches of the series. The fourth and final game finished 3-3, ensuring the series ended level overall.

India’s men showed attacking flair and resilience across the tournament, particularly in their ability to recover after the second-match defeat, while the future Kookaburras impressed with structure, composure and consistency under pressure.

Beyond the results, the bilateral series was widely seen as a valuable experience for both teams ahead of future international tournaments. The tour provided players an opportunity to experience different styles of hockey, adapt to pressure situations and build confidence at the international level.

The Australian squads also embraced the cultural experience during their stay in India, with players and coaches praising the hospitality and atmosphere in Bhopal throughout the week.

With closely fought matches, high-scoring contests and strong sportsmanship on display, the Under-18 bilateral series offered an encouraging glimpse into the future of hockey in both India and Australia.
