The Albanese Government has secured more than 550 million litres of additional fuel, including jet fuel and diesel, as it moves to shore up Australia’s energy security amid ongoing global instability.
Prime Minister Albanese said the government was working “day and night” to protect Australia from the fallout of international conflict impacting global fuel markets. “My Government is working day and night, here and abroad, to shield Australians from the worst of the impacts of a war on the other side of the world,” he said.
“In the face of global instability, we are leaving no stone unturned as we work to keep Australia moving, working and flying.”
Trade Minister Don Farrell said the additional supplies would support critical sectors, including aviation and freight.
“This additional fuel will keep our FIFO workers flying, our truckers driving, and our nation moving.”
Energy Minister Chris Bowen said the shipments demonstrated strong cooperation between government and industry to stabilise supply chains.
“The Government is continuing to strengthen our fuel supply chain in partnership with industry, and these additional cargoes are proof of that.”
Infrastructure and Transport Minister Catherine King added that securing jet fuel through strategic reserves marked a significant step for the aviation sector.
“This is a practical step towards strengthening Australia’s jet fuel supply and ensuring passengers and freight continue to move.”
The latest deal includes two shipments carrying 100 million litres of jet fuel and another shipment of 50 million litres of diesel, which will be delivered to Brisbane, Perth and Darwin.
These shipments are in addition to eight previously announced cargoes secured in partnership with BP Australia, Ampol and Viva Energy, expected to arrive in May and June.
In total, the government has now locked in more than 450 million litres of diesel and 100 million litres of jet fuel under its strategic reserve measures, aimed at ensuring continuity across transport, aviation and supply chains.
The government is also continuing discussions with industry partners to secure additional shipments, including fertiliser supplies, under its strategic reserve powers, with further announcements expected in the coming weeks.
