Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has called for stronger international cooperation and a more effective multilateral system, warning that global challenges cannot be solved by countries acting alone.
Addressing the Partners for Multilateralism, International Law, Peace and Prosperity (P4M) Summit at the United Nations in New York, Albanese said the world was facing a period of serious challenges, including conflicts in the Middle East and Europe, inflation, energy pressures and the rapid rise of artificial intelligence.
“Global challenges cannot be solved by countries acting alone,” Albanese said, calling for renewed commitment to the UN Charter and efforts to make the international system work more effectively.
The Prime Minister highlighted Australia’s campaign for a seat on the UN Security Council for the 2029–30 term, launched a day earlier.
He said Australia would seek to “listen with respect, partner as equals and protect what matters most – security, safety and prosperity”.
Albanese said middle powers had a responsibility to play a stronger role through partnerships on economic resilience, development finance, maritime security, climate action and emerging technologies.
He also highlighted Australia’s support for Pacific nations, particularly in addressing development and security challenges and the impacts of climate change.
On technology, Albanese pointed to Australia’s social media legislation as an example of efforts to shape the digital environment around human needs.
He said Australia would continue to uphold international law and work with partners to strengthen global cooperation.
“We believe middle powers must accept their responsibility to play a stronger role,” Albanese said.
