A major fire has destroyed a Sikh Gurudwara (temple) in Adelaide’s northern suburbs after a blaze broke out late on Sunday night, causing explosions, massive flames and the eventual collapse of the building.

It is reported that around 60 firefighters from the Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) and Country Fire Service (CFS) responded to the fire at Gurudwara Dashmesh Dabar in Virginia after receiving emergency calls at about 10 pm.

The temple operates a free community kitchen (langar) that provides hundreds of free meals every day.

Fire crews battled the intense blaze for several hours before bringing it under control. Authorities said firefighters successfully prevented the fire from spreading to neighbouring properties despite the building being extensively damaged and ultimately collapsing.

A smoke warning was issued for residents in and around Virginia Township, including Old Port Wakefield Road, Sheedy Road, Port Wakefield Highway, Juniper Boulevard and Penfield Road. Residents were advised to avoid the area and remain alert to changing conditions.

Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. No injuries have been reported at this stage, and the cause of the blaze remains unknown.

The destruction of the gurudwara is expected to have a significant impact on the local Sikh community, particularly those who relied on its daily community kitchen and support services.
