Marvel Stadium is understood to have been locked in as the preferred venue for the Melbourne Meets Modi community reception, with nearly 26,000 people already registering interest to attend Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s expected visit to Australia next month.
The Australia Today can confirm that almost 26,000 people have registered for the major community event, which is now being planned for the evening of 9 July in Melbourne.
The final official announcement will be made by Australian and Indian Officials together, but The Australia Today is given to understand that the date has been narrowed down to 9 July and that Marvel Stadium in Docklands has emerged as the most appropriate venue after security and logistics assessments.

A delegation of Indian security officials, working with Australian officials, is understood to have visited two potential locations in Melbourne before Marvel Stadium became the preferred option.
The choice of venue reflects both the scale of expected community interest and the security requirements attached to a visit by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Marvel Stadium, located in Melbourne’s Docklands precinct, is one of Australia’s major multi-purpose venues and is regularly used for AFL matches, concerts and large public events. Its central location, transport links, controlled entry points and large seating capacity are understood to have been key considerations in the venue assessment.

The expected Melbourne event is being planned as one of the largest Indian diaspora gatherings in Australia since Modi’s 2023 community reception at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, where he appeared alongside Prime Minister Anthony Albanese before thousands of Indian Australians.
The Melbourne Meets Modi registration portal opened earlier this month for individuals not registering through community organisations. The portal lists the general registration deadline as 11.59 pm on 15 June 2026 and says media credentials will open later.
The event is expected to bring together community groups, business leaders, students, professionals, cultural organisations and representatives from across Australia’s Indian diaspora.
While the Indian government has not yet formally released the Prime Minister’s official Australia itinerary, preparations have been intensifying in Melbourne for what is expected to be one of the highest-profile visits by an Indian leader to Victoria.
The Australia Today understands that planning is now focused on the 9 July evening window, with venue, ticketing and security arrangements being worked through by organisers and officials.
Modi’s expected visit comes at a time when Australia and India have deepened cooperation across trade, education, defence, technology, migration and people-to-people links.

The two countries elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2020, and the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement entered into force in December 2022. Negotiations continue for a more ambitious Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement.
Melbourne is home to one of Australia’s largest Indian-origin communities, making the city a politically and diplomatically important location for a major diaspora event.
The expected gathering at Marvel Stadium is also likely to carry strong symbolic weight. Community receptions for Modi overseas have often been used to highlight India’s global diaspora, showcase cultural performances and underline bilateral ties with host countries.
In 2023, Modi’s visit to Sydney became a major moment in Australia-India relations, with Albanese publicly celebrating the contribution of Indian Australians and announcing new initiatives, including the headquarters of the Centre for Australia-India Relations in Parramatta and a new Australian Consulate-General in Bengaluru.
A Melbourne event would shift the focus to Victoria, where Indian migrants, students, professionals and business owners have become a major part of the state’s social and economic fabric.
Organisers are expected to face strong demand for tickets, with registrations already approaching 27,000 before the closing deadline.
However, registration does not automatically guarantee entry. Final attendance numbers will depend on ticketing, security approvals, seating arrangements and official protocols.
The Australia Today contacted the community event organisers, Australia India Foundation, However, phone calls, messages, and emails have gone unanswered. We shall add to the story as and when we receive the response.
The scale of the response suggests major enthusiasm within the Indian Australian community, particularly among those who were unable to attend previous events in Sydney or who see the expected Melbourne visit as a rare opportunity to see the Indian Prime Minister in person.
The event is likely to draw attendees from Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and other states, as well as community organisations from across the country.
Security will remain a major part of the planning process. Visits by heads of government involve close coordination between host authorities, diplomatic security teams, local police, venue operators and event organisers.
With Marvel Stadium now understood to be the preferred venue and 9 July emerging as the expected date, attention will turn to the formal confirmation of Modi’s visit and the final details of the Melbourne Meets Modi program.
For now, one thing is clear: the Indian Australian community is preparing for a major moment in Melbourne.
If confirmed, the Marvel Stadium event will place Victoria at the centre of the next major chapter in Australia-India people-to-people diplomacy.
