Senior Australian and Indian air force leaders have held high-level defence talks in Canberra and Brisbane aimed at strengthening military cooperation and advancing a future-focused Indo-Pacific partnership.

Steven Pesce, Deputy Chief of Air Force for the Royal Australian Air Force, hosted Sanjeev Taliyan from the Indian Air Force during the 12th Air Staff Talks between the two nations.

The discussions focused on enhancing operational synergy, interoperability, joint exercises, training opportunities and future aerospace collaboration between the two air forces.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening defence ties and contributing to regional stability across the Indo-Pacific.

The talks come as Australia and India continue expanding defence cooperation under their broader Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with increasing collaboration across military training, strategic engagement and maritime security.

Australian Defence officials said the growing partnership reflects the shared strategic interests of both nations in maintaining a secure and stable Indo-Pacific region.

The latest Air Staff Talks also built on previous agreements aimed at improving interoperability between the Australian and Indian armed forces, including cooperation in air operations and surveillance activities.

Earlier defence discussions between Australia and India resulted in arrangements allowing closer operational coordination between both countries’ air forces, including support for air-to-air refuelling activities involving RAAF aircraft and Indian military platforms.

Officials from both nations described the talks as another significant step in strengthening long-term defence engagement and professional military cooperation between Canberra and New Delhi.
