15-year-old Samar Partap Singh makes history with youngest Premier Cricket First XI debut in 30 years

Fifteen-year-old leg-spinner and middle-order batter Samar Partap Singh is set to make his Victorian Premier Cricket First XI debut for Prahran this weekend, becoming the club’s youngest debutant since Michael Klinger made his District Cricket debut around 30 years ago.

Singh has earned his place in Prahran’s First XI for the opening round of the 2026–27 season after a rapid rise through Melbourne’s grassroots and junior cricket pathway. The teenager previously played for Tarneit Central Cricket Club and the Western Region Junior Cricket Association (WRJCA), while also gaining senior cricket experience with Yarraville last season, where he was already playing First XI cricket at the age of 14.

His selection follows an outstanding season in the Dowling Shield. Singh took a competition-high 21 wickets at an average of 12.48 and scored 208 runs at 29.71. Among his standout performances was an innings of 70 from just 35 balls, alongside four wickets against Frankston Peninsula.

He also impressed at the national Under-15 championships in February, where he averaged 37 with the bat and 10.36 with the ball and was named the tournament’s leading player. In July, Cricket Victoria selected him in the Victorian Metro Under-17 Male Emerging Players squad for the 2026–27 season.

Prahran director of cricket Neil Schlittler told The Australian that Singh’s selection was based on his performances rather than simply his long-term potential.

“We have not picked him on potential. We’ve picked him on what we’ve seen in the pre-season.”

Singh is expected to bat in the middle order and provide Prahran with a leg-spin option when Victorian Premier Cricket’s Men’s First XI season begins with one-day matches on October 3.

The teenager’s development has been closely connected with Melbourne’s west. WRJCA celebrated his selection, describing it as an example of grassroots cricket helping young players progress to higher levels.

“It’s fantastic to see our WRJCA player Samar progressing through the ranks and reaching this exciting milestone,” the association said.

“This is what grassroots cricket is all about, nurturing talent and watching our young cricketers shine at the next level!”

Singh’s pathway has included community cricket, Sub-District senior cricket, the Dowling Shield and Victorian junior representative cricket before his elevation to Prahran’s Premier First XI.

His debut also carries historical significance for Prahran. Klinger was 15 when he made his District Cricket debut for the club during the 1995–96 season and later went on to score a century against St Kilda. Schlittler, who was at Prahran at the time, told The Australian that he could not recall a younger District or Premier Cricket debutant since Klinger.
