At least 12 Indian nationals have died in a major explosion at Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, the Indian Embassy in Doha has confirmed, as authorities continue investigations into the deadly incident.
The explosion occurred on Sunday night at the Barzan local gas supply facility in Ras Laffan, one of Qatar’s key energy hubs. Qatari authorities confirmed that Indian nationals were among those killed, while all injured workers are in stable condition and receiving medical treatment.
“Qatari authorities have confirmed that 12 Indian nationals have unfortunately passed away in the Ras Laffan incident yesterday night,” the Indian Embassy said in a statement.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the departed souls.”
The embassy said it was working closely with Qatari authorities to provide all possible assistance to affected Indian nationals and their families, including arrangements to send the mortal remains of the deceased to India at the earliest.
India’s External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar expressed grief over the loss of lives.
“Deeply saddened by the loss of lives and injuries, including of Indian nationals, in the explosion at Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City,” Dr Jaishankar said.
He added that the Indian Embassy was in contact with Qatari authorities and was reaching out to families of those affected.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.”
Qatar’s Interior Ministry said the incident at the Barzan gas supply facility resulted in at least 13 deaths and dozens of injuries. Qatar Energy Minister Saad Sherida al-Kaabi said those killed included workers from India and Pakistan.
The explosion caused a major fire that lit up the skyline near Doha and was felt across the region. Emergency response teams were deployed immediately, and the blaze was brought under control.
Officials said the incident was a “technical accident” and not the result of sabotage or hostile action. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the blast.
The explosion occurred as Qatar was attempting to restart operations at the facility following earlier disruptions caused by regional tensions and damage to energy infrastructure.
Ras Laffan Industrial City is home to Qatar’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing and export facilities and plays a crucial role in global energy supply.
Qatar Energy Minister al-Kaabi said the accident would not affect Qatar’s LNG exports, although the timeline for a full recovery of operations remains uncertain.
