‘Modi Express Flight’ opens for Sydney community members travelling to ‘Melbourne Meets Modi’

Community organisers have opened an expression of interest for a proposed group flight from Sydney to Melbourne for people planning to attend the Melbourne Meets Modi community reception in July.

The proposed “Modi Express Flight” would support Sydney-based community members hoping to travel together to Melbourne for the expected visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The expression of interest form asks interested travellers to provide their full name, email address, phone number, organisation name under which they registered for the event, number of travellers and the age of each traveller.

Organisers have stressed that the form is only an expression of interest and does not amount to a confirmed flight booking or ticket.

“This form is for Expression of Interest only and does not constitute a flight booking or confirmation,” the notice states.

“Subject to demand and availability, a representative may contact you regarding travel arrangements and booking options for the Sydney to Melbourne journey.”

The move reflects growing community enthusiasm around Melbourne Meets Modi, which is expected to draw Indian Australians from across the country.

The official Melbourne Meets Modi website says general registrations are open for people not registering through an organisation, with the registration deadline listed as 11.59 pm on 15 June 2026.

The Australia Today has previously reported that Marvel Stadium has emerged as the preferred venue for the event, which is being planned for the evening of 9 July. Nearly 31,000 people are understood to have registered interest in attending the community reception.

The proposed Sydney-to-Melbourne group travel arrangement is aimed at helping community members coordinate travel if sufficient demand is received.

While no airline, ticket price or final flight schedule has been formally announced, the “Modi Express Flight” branding has already attracted attention on social media, with the promotional poster featuring an aircraft, Australia-India imagery and details of the expression of interest process.

The idea of community-organised group travel for Modi events is not new in Australia.

During Modi’s 2023 visit to Sydney, diaspora groups helped coordinate special community travel from Melbourne to Sydney for the “Australia Welcomes Modi” event at Qudos Bank Arena. That event drew thousands of Indian Australians and became one of the most high-profile diaspora gatherings during the visit.

The 2026 Melbourne event is expected to carry similar significance for the Indian Australian community, particularly in Victoria, which is home to one of the country’s largest Indian-origin populations.

Community receptions for Modi overseas have often become large cultural and diplomatic events, bringing together Indian-origin professionals, students, business owners, religious organisations, cultural associations and community groups.

In Melbourne, preparations have been gathering pace as organisers work through registration, venue, ticketing, security and travel logistics.

The Sydney group flight proposal appears to be part of a broader effort to make the event accessible to Indian Australians outside Victoria, especially those travelling in groups under community organisations.

However, organisers are likely to face practical issues including demand, aircraft availability, pricing, passenger details, security requirements and coordination with event ticketing.

Those interested in the Sydney-to-Melbourne group flight have been asked to register their interest through the Google Form circulated by organisers.

The notice makes clear that submitting the form does not guarantee a seat and that any travel arrangements will depend on demand and availability.

With registrations for Melbourne Meets Modi continuing and community travel planning now underway, the expected visit is shaping up as a major national moment for the Indian diaspora in Australia.

If confirmed, the Melbourne reception will be one of the largest Indian community events held in Australia since Modi’s 2023 Sydney appearance.
