The brother of a Indian-origin school teacher who vanished in India has been arrested and charged with murder after allegedly confessing to the killing.

Sunil Sharma, 66, a mathematics teacher at Diamond Valley College, had travelled to India to sell two properties before returning to Australia for retirement.

His disappearance was initially treated as suspicious, with family members revealing that his brother, Sunny Sharma, was believed to be the last person to see him alive.

As per 7News, Indian police have now charged Sunny Sharma with murder, alleging he confessed to killing his brother and disposing of his body in a river with the assistance of his son.

Authorities claim the pair then fled before being apprehended.

Police have not yet confirmed whether Sunil Sharma’s body has been recovered.

The development comes just weeks after Sharma’s daughter, Surbhi Sharma, made an emotional public appeal for information about her father’s whereabouts.

In a statement following the arrest, she paid tribute to her father, describing him as “intelligent, strong and funny” but also “loving and sensitive”.

She also thanked students and staff at Diamond Valley College, saying it warmed her heart to know he had “given the gift of education to hundreds of students over the course of his life”.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue efforts to locate Sunil Sharma’s remains.
