Individual registrations have opened for the proposed “Melbourne Meets Modi” community reception, as preparations gather pace for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s expected visit to Melbourne in July 2026.
The event, promoted as a major community reception in honour of Modi, is expected to take place in Melbourne on either 9 or 10 July, with the final date yet to be confirmed by organisers. The promotional material says the event will be open to individuals as well as members of more than 400 registered organisations.
The Melbourne Meets Modi website says general registrations are now open for people not registering through an organisation. It lists the deadline for general registration as 11.59 pm on 15 June 2026 and says people aged 18 and above must provide an email address for venue ticketing system integration.

The registration portal also states that Welcome Partner registrations have closed, while media credentials are listed as “coming soon”.

The event is being organised under the banner of the Australia India Foundation, with the promotional campaign using the theme “Melbourne Meets Modi: Vision, Partnership, Progress”.
A message circulated by organisers says: “The wait is over, Australia! Individual registrations are now open for Honourable Prime Minister Modi’s historic visit to Melbourne this July 2026.”
“Whether you’re part of one of our 400+ registered organisations or joining us as an individual, this is your moment. Everyone is welcome. Everyone belongs here.”
While the event campaign is moving ahead, an official announcement of Modi’s visit from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs or Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has not yet been made.
It would be Modi’s first major community event in Melbourne and one of the largest Indian diaspora gatherings planned in Australia in recent years.
Melbourne has one of the country’s largest and fastest-growing Indian-origin communities, and organisers are positioning the event as a celebration of the Australia-India relationship, the Indian diaspora’s contribution, and growing ties across business, education, culture and diplomacy.
Modi last visited Australia in 2023, when he addressed a packed diaspora event in Sydney and held talks with Albanese. The Sydney event drew thousands of Indian Australians and became a major moment in community diplomacy between the two countries.
The proposed Melbourne reception comes as Australia and India continue to deepen cooperation across trade, defence, education, skills, migration, clean energy and people-to-people links. The two countries are also members of the Quad, alongside Japan and the United States, and have increasingly described their relationship as central to Indo-Pacific stability.
Community organisations are expected to play a major role in mobilisation for the Melbourne event, with organisers previously inviting groups to participate through organisational representation, community support and partnership opportunities. The Australia Today earlier reported that organisational registrations had been opened by the Australia India Foundation as planning began for the proposed visit.
The latest opening of individual registrations means people who are not affiliated with a registered organisation can now apply directly to attend.
Organisers have urged community members to register early, saying places may be limited once venue and ticketing arrangements are finalised.
The final date, venue details, security arrangements and media accreditation process are expected to be announced closer to the event.
