The Commonwealth Secretariat has announced the appointment of Australian-British executive Tania Baumann as Deputy Secretary-General (Corporate), alongside Indian diplomat Tanmaya Lal as Deputy Secretary-General (Programmes).

The appointments were announced by Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey as the organisation strengthens its leadership team ahead of the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Antigua and Barbuda later this year.

Baumann commenced her appointment on 21 May 2026 and will oversee the Secretariat’s corporate operations, including finance, governance, human resources and organisational strategy.

A British and Australian citizen, Baumann previously served as Chief Operating Officer of the World Energy Council, where she managed operations across a 90-country network and worked on energy transition and sustainability initiatives.

She has also held senior leadership roles at Nominet and the International Chamber of Commerce UK.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Lal, who assumed office in March 2026, will oversee the Commonwealth Secretariat’s programme delivery across democratic resilience, economic resilience and environmental resilience under the organisation’s 2025–2030 Strategic Plan.

A veteran Indian diplomat with nearly 35 years of experience, Lal previously served as Secretary (West) in India’s Ministry of External Affairs and held senior diplomatic postings including Ambassador to Sweden and Latvia, High Commissioner to Mauritius and Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York.

During his diplomatic career, he led negotiations on major global issues including climate change, migration, sustainable development and artificial intelligence, while also working extensively on India’s development partnerships across Africa and the Global South.

Speaking after taking up the role, Lal said it was an honour to join the Commonwealth team and contribute to programmes spanning governance, trade, climate, sustainability and oceans to deliver value for member states.

The Commonwealth Secretariat said the appointments come at a critical time as the 56-member organisation seeks to strengthen cooperation on governance, sustainability, trade and global resilience.
