Albanese vows “most ambitious” Budget to build a stronger, more resilient Australia

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has outlined an ambitious economic agenda ahead of the federal Budget, promising major investments and reforms aimed at strengthening Australia’s resilience in the face of global uncertainty.

Speaking in Perth, Albanese said the upcoming Budget would be the government’s “most important” and “most ambitious” to date, as the country grapples with ongoing economic disruption linked to global conflict and rising energy costs. He warned that while the timing and trajectory of international crises remain beyond Australia’s control, the nation can determine how it responds.

Central to the government’s plan is a renewed focus on productivity, investment and supply chain resilience. Albanese announced a $45 million commitment to streamline environmental approvals, allowing states to undertake assessments on behalf of the Commonwealth under new bilateral agreements. The reform is designed to cut duplication and fast-track major projects in energy, housing and resources, while maintaining national environmental standards.

The Prime Minister framed the changes as a “circuit breaker” for long approval delays that have discouraged investment and slowed economic growth. He said simplifying the system into a “single-touch” process would provide clearer and faster decisions for businesses.

In Western Australia, the government also unveiled a joint $1.1 billion infrastructure investment with the state government to upgrade key freight routes linked to the proposed Westport container terminal in Kwinana. The project includes major upgrades to Anketell Road, aimed at improving freight efficiency, reducing congestion and supporting long-term trade growth.

Albanese said the investment would strengthen supply chains, boost productivity and create jobs, particularly in industries linked to resources, defence and critical minerals. He emphasised that infrastructure spending remains a key pillar of the government’s economic strategy.

The Prime Minister also highlighted broader reforms to enhance national resilience, including efforts to secure fuel supplies, support domestic manufacturing and expand clean energy capacity. He said Australia must adapt to a changing global environment by moving up the value chain and producing more goods domestically.

While acknowledging ongoing cost-of-living pressures, Albanese argued that strengthening the economy would help deliver higher wages, more secure jobs and improved living standards over time. He positioned the Budget as a response not only to immediate challenges but also to long-term structural issues in the economy.

“As long as we hold true to our values and back ourselves,” he said, “we will come through this stronger, more resilient and ready to seize the opportunities ahead.”
