Vandals smash Nepali restaurant in third attack, owner Mandeep Baral offers offenders a job

A Central Queensland restaurant has been targeted for the third time in six months, with vandals causing about $5,000 in damage, prompting an unexpected response from its owner.

8848 Momo House on George Street in Rockhampton had eight glass windows and doors smashed in, which the owner, Mandeep Baral, believes may have been a targeted attack.

Despite the repeated incidents, Mr Baral has taken a conciliatory approach, publicly offering the offenders a job at his restaurant to help them understand the impact of their actions.

The latest attack left thousands of dollars in repair costs, adding to the strain on the small business, which opened in 2024 and brings Nepali cuisine to the region.

Mr Baral, who grew up in Nepal helping his mother cook and selling momos at local markets, said there was “no bad blood”, even as he dealt with the aftermath of the damage.

The restaurant has quickly become part of the local dining scene, offering a taste of Nepal while supporting the Rockhampton community.

Police are investigating the incident.
