Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has presented New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon with traditional Indian artworks and handicrafts, showcasing the country’s diverse cultural heritage during his official visit to New Zealand.

Among the gifts was the Uttarakhandi Cap, also known as the Traditional Pahari Cap, a distinctive symbol of Uttarakhand’s Himalayan identity and cultural traditions.

Handcrafted from high-quality wool, the cap features traditional woven patterns and represents the region’s craftsmanship, warmth and hospitality. Traditionally worn during festivals, religious ceremonies, weddings and community gatherings, the cap reflects pride, dignity and respect while preserving indigenous textile techniques.

PM Modi also gifted Luxon a Bastar Dhokra Tree of Life sculpture, created using the ancient lost-wax metal casting technique practised by tribal artisans of Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region.

The artwork represents harmony, renewal and the connection between humanity and nature, while highlighting India’s centuries-old tribal metal craftsmanship.

The cultural exchange came during Modi’s visit to Auckland, where he joined Prime Minister Luxon for a special sporting showcase marking 100 years of sporting ties between India and New Zealand.

The leaders explored advances in sports technology, including innovative equipment such as advanced bicycle frames and 3D-printed athletic gear, reflecting the role of creativity and technology in shaping the future of sport.

Through these gifts, PM Modi highlighted India’s diverse cultural landscape — from Himalayan weaving traditions to tribal artistry — while strengthening the people-to-people connection between India and New Zealand.
